Bindyarani Devi wins Bronze for India in Women's 58kg Weightlifting at Glasgow CWG

Manipur's Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam added another weightlifting medal to India's Commonwealth Games tally, clinching Bronze in the Women's 58kg category at Glasgow — a result built on years of grit at the NSNIS Patiala camp.

India's weightlifting contingent continued its dependable run at the Commonwealth Games with Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam securing a Bronze medal in the Women's 58kg event at Glasgow. The Manipur lifter, a familiar face on the international platform, held her nerve in the clean and jerk to seal a podium finish for the country.

Bindyarani's journey to Glasgow has been anything but straightforward. Trained under the Sports Authority of India (SAI) system at the NSNIS Patiala camp and mentored through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) developmental group, she has steadily climbed the ranks since her breakthrough silver at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. A back injury and a difficult 2024 season had slowed her build-up, but she returned to competition weight through the 2025-26 domestic circuit with a series of strong showings at the Senior Nationals and the Commonwealth Championships.

At Glasgow, her snatch attempts were measured rather than aggressive — a deliberate strategy that kept her in medal contention going into the clean and jerk, where she is traditionally stronger. A clean second attempt in the clean and jerk lifted her onto the podium, ahead of a competitive field that included lifters from Nigeria, England and Canada.

The medal is the latest data point in a broader trend: Indian women's weightlifting, once carried almost single-handedly by Karnam Malleswari's legacy, now has genuine depth across the 49kg to 71kg categories. Mirabai Chanu, Bindyarani Devi and a rising group of Khelo India-backed juniors form the core of a category that consistently delivers Commonwealth and Asian Championship medals, and increasingly, world-level finishes.

For Bindyarani herself, Glasgow is a marker on the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic cycle. With the weightlifting programme at LA 2028 confirmed and the qualification window opening from the 2026 World Championships onwards, this Bronze — and the return to competitive form it signals — puts her firmly back in the national federation's Olympic planning group. Heartfelt congratulations to her, her coaches, and the SAI support staff who have stood behind this campaign.
