The Handball Federation of India (HFI) is undergoing a significant administrative overhaul to align itself with the standards required for a professional league setup. Following years of internal disputes that hindered the sport's growth, a new governance framework has been established under the guidance of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The primary goal of these reforms is to ensure that a professional league can operate without the threat of legal challenges or administrative paralysis.

Central to these reforms is the creation of a dedicated commercial wing that will handle broadcasting rights and league operations independently from the federation’s day-to-day regulatory functions. This separation of powers is intended to build confidence among potential private investors who have previously been hesitant to commit capital to the sport. The federation is also drafting a new constitution that emphasizes athlete representation and transparent financial auditing.

On the court, the focus is on improving the national team’s ranking to qualify for higher-tier Asian competitions. The lack of international exposure has been a major bottleneck for Indian handball players, who often struggle with the pace and physicality of European and Middle Eastern teams. By establishing a professional league, the HFI hopes to provide domestic players with year-round competitive play and access to international coaching staff, which will naturally elevate the quality of the national squad.

Economically, handball represents an untapped market in India. It is a high-speed, high-scoring sport that fits the requirements of modern television. The federation is currently in talks with several sports management firms to finalize the footprint for the first season, with a strategy that involves utilizing existing multi-purpose indoor arenas in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Jaipur to keep operational overheads low.
