- Open to sportspersons and their families in indigent circumstances — income below ₹8 lakh per annum from all sources; regular government/PSU employees excluded.
- Amount / benefit value
- Notified ceilings under the amended scheme: indigent circumstances up to ₹5 lakh; families of deceased sportspersons up to ₹5 lakh; medical treatment up to ₹10 lakh; injuries in training/competition up to ₹10 lakh; training, equipment and event participation up to ₹2.5 lakh; coaches and support personnel up to ₹2 lakh (₹4 lakh medical). The Minister may sanction up to ₹20 lakh in deserving cases.

Frequently asked questions
Who can apply to the welfare fund?+
Sportspersons who represented India or a state and are now in indigent circumstances, sportspersons injured while training or competing, and dependants of deceased sportspersons. Applications are forwarded through the state sports department or the relevant federation.
Is this the same as the sports pension scheme?+
No. The pension scheme is a monthly pension for meritorious international medallists; the welfare fund gives one-time assistance based on need or injury.
