Note: The scheme is operated through the 'Sports Fund for Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons', managed by a General Committee chaired by the Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, and is funded by Government grant, contributions from the National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons, and corporate donations. It is distinct from the National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons, which assists sportspersons in indigent circumstances. No arrears are paid for the period before the scheme came into force, and the notified scheme text contains no provision for transferring the pension to a spouse or dependant.

Frequently asked questions
Who is covered?+
Indian citizens who have won a gold, silver or bronze medal at the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Para Olympic Games, or a World Cup/World Championship held once in four years in an Olympic or Asian Games discipline.
When does the pension start?+
On attaining the age of 30, or the date of retirement from active sport, whichever is later. The applicant must give an undertaking in the application form that they have retired from an active sports career, and must furnish a life certificate when demanded.
Can I draw more than one pension under the scheme?+
No. Only one pension is payable, corresponding to the highest sports achievement.
How do I apply?+
In the Annexure-I proforma, submitted in triplicate with bank details in Annexure-II, recommended by the President or Secretary of the concerned National Sports Federation, or by a Deputy Secretary/Director of the State Sports Department on behalf of the State Government.
