Ahmedabad has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 World Weightlifting Championships, the first time India will stage the global event. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) confirmed Gujarat as host after its Executive Board meeting in Ningbo, China, during this year's championships.
Why it matters for India
India's best-known weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu, won the world title in the 48kg category in 2017 and an Olympic silver medal at Tokyo 2020. Hosting the world championships at home will give Indian lifters a rare chance to compete at the top level in front of home crowds. Ahmedabad is also the host city of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Note: Announced by the IWF on the sidelines of the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships. Exact dates will be announced later.
