What is Khelo India?
Khelo India is the Government of India's flagship grassroots sports development programme, run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It identifies talent at the school and college level, provides scholarships, and feeds athletes into India's high-performance Olympic pipeline through SAI training centres.
Who is eligible?
- Indian citizens between roughly 10 and 21 years old, depending on the age category (U-17 and U-21 are the primary brackets).
- Currently enrolled in a recognised school, college or university in India.
- Competing in a sport listed under the Khelo India programme (athletics, badminton, wrestling, hockey, kabaddi, archery, shooting, weightlifting, swimming, boxing and many others).
- Have either a state-level performance record or a recommendation from a recognised school/coach for trial selection.
Documents you'll need
- Aadhaar card (mandatory)
- Birth certificate or PAN card for age proof
- School / college ID and bonafide certificate
- Recent passport-size photograph
- Parent or guardian consent (if under 18)
- Bank account details in the athlete's name (for scholarship disbursal)
- Previous performance certificates, if any
Step-by-step registration
- Create an account on the official Khelo India portal using a valid email and mobile number.
- Complete the athlete profile — personal details, school, primary sport, coach contact and address.
- Upload scanned documents in the required format (PDF or JPG, usually under 1 MB each).
- Submit the application and note your registration ID for follow-ups.
- Wait for state-level trial dates announced by your State Sports Authority on the same portal.
- Attend the trials at your nearest centre. Performance benchmarks are sport-specific.
- Shortlisted athletes are invited to Khelo India Youth Games or Khelo India University Games.
- Selected scholars receive an annual scholarship and access to a Khelo India Accredited Academy.
