MGNREGA met 50% of the block complex cost.

Note: Kept on the site as a historical reference because the scheme is still widely searched for. It funded Gram Panchayat playfields (through MGNREGA convergence) and block-level sports complexes with 11 outdoor and 5 indoor disciplines, plus block-to-national competitions including rural, women and North East games, with priority for North Eastern states and 88 Left Wing Extremism affected districts.

  • Historical — assistance flowed to States and UTs, not to individuals
  • Block Panchayats and Gram Panchayats, with priority for North Eastern States and 88 Left Wing Extremism affected districts across 9 states
  • No longer open: the scheme has been replaced by Khelo India

Benefits

  • Sports complex at block level estimated at ₹1.60 crore — about ₹80 lakh for outdoor disciplines and ₹80 lakh for the indoor hall (which also housed a 30 sq m Youth Resource Centre)
  • Central grant of ₹80 lakh per block for sports infrastructure, with Centre:State sharing of 75:25 for normal states and 90:10 for special category states and UTs with legislature (100% central assistance for UTs without legislature)
  • Village-level playfields in each Gram Panchayat created through convergence with MGNREGA, which met 50% of the block sports complex cost
  • Annual block, district, state, regional and national competitions, including rural, women and North East games
  • Performance-linked incentive for the best performing states
