About
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is the national governing body for the sport of athletics — track and field, road running, race walking and cross country — in India. Established in 1946 and headquartered in New Delhi, AFI is affiliated to World Athletics (formerly the IAAF) and the Asian Athletics Association, and is recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports as the sole federation for athletics in the country. The AFI selects the senior national team, the U-23, U-20, U-18 and U-16 age-group teams for the Olympic Games, the World Athletics Championships, the World Relays, the World Athletics U-20 Championships, the Asian Games, the Asian Athletics Championships, the Commonwealth Games and all World Athletics Continental Tour and Label Road Race events. Domestically it conducts the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships, the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, the National Open Athletics Championships, the National Junior (U-20) and Youth (U-18) championships, the National Cross Country Championships and the National Race Walking Championships. AFI also sanctions World Athletics Label road races such as the TCS World 10K Bengaluru, the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon and the Tata Mumbai Marathon. The federation operates through affiliated state units and runs coach and technical official education programmes accredited by World Athletics.
