About
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is the national governing body for the sport of wrestling in India, covering the freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's freestyle disciplines on the Olympic mat. Founded in 1967 and headquartered in New Delhi, the WFI is affiliated to United World Wrestling (UWW), the international federation, and is recognised by the Indian Olympic Association and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports as the sole national federation for wrestling. The federation selects the senior men's and women's national teams, together with the U-23, U-20, U-17 and U-15 age-group teams, for the Olympic Games, the UWW World Wrestling Championships, the Asian Games, the Asian Wrestling Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships. Domestically the WFI conducts the Senior National Wrestling Championships (freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's), the U-23, Junior, Cadet and Sub-Junior Nationals, ranking series tournaments and inter-state and inter-services events. It also administers coach, referee and technical official education aligned with UWW pathways. The WFI's affairs have been under scrutiny in recent years and it has operated under an ad-hoc committee appointed by the Indian Olympic Association during periods of governance dispute; athletes and events, however, continue to be sanctioned within the UWW system.
