Acrobatic gymnastics is a partner discipline: gymnasts compete in pairs and groups rather than on apparatus, performing on a spring floor to music. FIG events cover women's pair, men's pair, mixed pair, women's group (three gymnasts) and men's group (four gymnasts). Partners are divided by role — bases support and throw, tops are lifted and thrown — and routines combine static balance elements, held for a required count, with dynamic elements of throws, catches and salto tempo work. Senior competition contests a balance routine, a dynamic routine and a combined routine, each with time limits. Scoring adds difficulty, execution and artistry components, with deductions for insufficient hold time, broken form, unsteady catches, falls and stepping outside the floor area; partners must also fall within the age and, at some levels, height-difference limits set for the category.
Authoritative rulebook: GFI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in acrobatic gymnastics.
- National Acrobatics and Tumbling Championship
Run by the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI, established 17 February 1951, affiliated to the FIG and the Asian Gymnastics Union, with around 28 affiliated state units). GFI staged India's first national championship in acrobatics and trampoline at Hyderabad in October 2002, and added a junior section at the 5th National Acrobatic and Trampoline Championship at Thane in 2008. Acrobatics and Tumbling is now one of GFI's standing national championship categories alongside Senior, Junior and Sub-Junior Artistic and Rhythmic & Aerobic.
- Khelo India pathway
GFI's Talent Identification and Development Committee scouts the Senior, Junior and Sub-Junior National Championships, Khelo India Youth Games and School Games Federation of India events to induct gymnasts into the Khelo India Athlete scheme and National Centres of Excellence.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in acrobatic gymnastics.
- Asian Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships
India's strongest gymnastics discipline by international results. At the 12th edition in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan in September 2022, India finished third in the medal table with five medals — two gold, one silver and two bronze — behind only Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with golds in the women's pair and women's group. At the 2023 edition in Tashkent, India again placed third with five medals: gold in the women's group, silver in the women's pair, mixed pair and men's group, and bronze in the men's pair.
- Earlier Asian results
India's rise is recent. At the 10th edition in Almaty in 2017 India took a single bronze, in the men's group, finishing sixth overall; at the 11th in Tashkent in 2019 India won four bronzes for fifth place.
- Olympic status
Acrobatic gymnastics is not an Olympic discipline. Its highest-level multi-sport platform is The World Games, alongside FIG World Championships and World Cup and World Challenge Cup series.
Leagues
No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for acrobatic gymnastics. The national championship under GFI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in acrobatic gymnastics — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Acrobatic gymnastics has produced India's most consistent gymnastics medal returns at continental level, and notably India's golds have come in the women's pair and women's group events — a rare instance of Indian women's teams topping an Asian championship podium
- The discipline needs partners rather than solo apparatus work, so it develops in clubs and academies that can sustain stable pairs and groups over years, which favours established state units such as Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh
- Because acrobatic gymnastics is non-Olympic, it falls outside the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, so funding runs mainly through Khelo India induction, state associations and club support rather than elite Olympic pathways
- Judging and coaching certification runs through GFI under FIG rules, with national judges' courses held regularly — a realistic post-competition route given the technical demands of scoring pairs and group routines
- Indian gymnastics overall remains under-resourced relative to cricket, with limited facilities and public interest, which makes the acrobatic squad's Asian medal record notable rather than routine

FAQs
Common questions about acrobatic gymnastics in India.
Who governs Acrobatic Gymnastics in India?▾
We list GFI as the Indian governing/organising body for Acrobatic Gymnastics, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Acrobatic Gymnastics an Olympic sport?▾
No, Acrobatic Gymnastics is not on the Olympic programme.
How do I start playing Acrobatic Gymnastics in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under GFI. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Acrobatic Gymnastics athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Acrobatic Gymnastics is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Acrobatic Gymnastics does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
