Artistic Gymnastics is listed on SportSupport in the gymnastics category. Its recorded origin is Ancient Greece. It is on the Olympic programme. We list GFI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Artistic Gymnastics is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through GFI against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.

Rules
Artistic gymnastics is scored on separate apparatus — vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor for women; floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar for men. Each routine is judged on two components: a D-score for difficulty (the value of the elements performed and their connections) and an E-score for execution, which starts at 10.0 and has deductions taken for bent knees, poor form, wobbles, steps on landing and falls. The two are added for the final score, which is why margins are often decided by fractions of a tenth. Competition runs through qualification, then all-around, team and individual apparatus finals, with a limit on how many gymnasts per country may advance to a final.
Authoritative rulebook: GFI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

- Olympic Games
Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian gymnast to compete at the Olympics in 52 years (since 1964) and the first Indian woman ever, reaching the vault final at Rio 2016 and finishing fourth — missing bronze by just 0.15 points, one of India's most-remembered Olympic near-misses. She is one of only five women in the world to have successfully landed the Produnova vault, nicknamed the 'vault of death.'
- Asian Gymnastics Championships
Karmakar won India's first-ever gold medal in any apparatus at these championships in 2024 (Tashkent) — India had previously managed only bronze (Ashish Kumar 2006, Karmakar herself 2015, Pranati Nayak 2019 and 2022).

Career Options
Ways to build a career in artistic gymnastics — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Dipa Karmakar's story is one of the most compelling in Indian sport: told as a child she could never be a gymnast because of flat feet, she trained from age 6 under coach Bishweshwar Nandi and competed in her first competition without proper shoes, in a borrowed, ill-fitting costume
- Despite her historic results, she spoke candidly about real structural obstacles — having to personally fund a World Cup trip to Cairo despite being a senior national champion, and citing a lack of clarity from GFI and the Sports Authority of India that prevented a Paris 2024 Olympic qualification attempt
- She retired in October 2024 after 25 years in the sport
- Playing pathway through GFI's junior and senior national championships; current gymnasts like Pranati Nayak (a Tokyo Olympian) continue India's competitive presence; coaching pathway through GFI-affiliated state academies

FAQs
Common questions about artistic gymnastics in India.
Who governs Artistic Gymnastics in India?▾
We list GFI as the Indian governing/organising body for Artistic Gymnastics, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Artistic Gymnastics an Olympic sport?▾
Yes, Artistic Gymnastics is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by GFI against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.
How do I start playing Artistic Gymnastics in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under GFI. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Artistic Gymnastics athletes?▾
TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Artistic Gymnastics is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Artistic Gymnastics does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
