Biathlon is listed on SportSupport in the winter category. Its recorded origin is Nordic. It is on the Olympic programme. We list Winter Games Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Biathlon is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through Winter Games Federation of India against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for biathlon athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)

Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether biathlon is among the covered disciplines.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to biathlon.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Rules

Biathlon combines cross-country skiing in the free (skate) technique with prone and standing rifle shooting. Athletes ski a course broken by shooting bouts at a 50m range, firing five shots at targets 45mm across when prone and 115mm when standing; each miss costs either a 150m penalty loop, an added minute, or an extra spare round depending on the format. The main formats are the individual, sprint, pursuit, mass start and relays, with start order and gaps set by format — the pursuit and mass start seed athletes on earlier results, while relays allow spare rounds per bout. Rifles must be carried on the athlete's back for the whole race, and the sport is governed internationally by the International Biathlon Union (IBU).

Authoritative rulebook: Winter Games Federation of India. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across winter sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced biathlon squad list.

  • Alpine / cross-country / snowboard
Timed and judged snow disciplines under FIS rules.
  • Skating & ice hockey
Speed skating, figure skating and ice hockey under ISU / IIHF.
  • Sliding sports
Bobsleigh, luge and skeleton contested on ice tracks.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in biathlon at a federation-recognised event.

  • Small-bore .22 LR biathlon rifle, minimum 3.5kg, with a harness for carrying it on the back and straight-pull bolt action
  • Skate-technique cross-country skis, boots and poles matched to snow temperature, plus wax and tuning kit
  • Prepared skate trail plus a 50m range with mechanical or electronic targets — the range is what makes biathlon venues rare
  • Race suit, gloves, sighting scope for zeroing, and magazines carried on the rifle stock

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in biathlon.

  • National Winter Biathlon Championship

Held at Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, the only Indian venue with reliable snow and the range infrastructure the sport needs. It runs separately from the Khelo India Winter Games, whose snow leg covers alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, ski mountaineering and snowboarding but not biathlon.

  • High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS)

The Army's HAWS at Gulmarg is the effective national training base for the discipline. Established in December 1948 as the 19 Infantry Division Ski School under General K S Thimayya, later the Winter Warfare School, it was upgraded in 1962 to a Category A Training Establishment. It trains Army athletes alongside CRPF and ITBP skiers, and sends its strongest to Europe for competition exposure.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in biathlon.

  • Asian Winter Games

Biathlon was one of the eleven sports on the programme at Harbin 2025, with four events. India sent its largest-ever winter contingent of 59 athletes to those Games but competed in only six sports — alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, short-track speed skating, speed skating and men's ice hockey — and did not enter biathlon.

  • International presence

No documented Indian results at IBU World Championships or World Cup level were found in available sources. India's biathlon activity is currently domestic, centred on the Gulmarg championship and armed forces training.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for biathlon. The national championship under Winter Games Federation of India remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in biathlon — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Biathlon in India is overwhelmingly a services sport, because it needs both cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship — a combination the Army, CRPF and ITBP already train for operationally at high altitude
  • Renu Danu's route shows how the pathway works in practice: a CRPF constable, she saw snow for the first time at 24, trained for barely a month before finishing well down the field at the 2024 Khelo India Winter Games, and by 2025 had won gold at the National Winter Biathlon Championship at Gulmarg. She took three silvers at the 2026 Khelo India Winter Games in Nordic 15km, Nordic 1.5km sprint and the ski mountaineering relay, training at HAWS under Olympian coach Nadeem Iqbal alongside CRPF coach K. Shukla
  • Biathlon athletes in India typically come through Nordic skiing rather than the other way round, and the same small group competes across Nordic, ski mountaineering and biathlon events
  • Winter sports funding in India remains limited — athletes outside the services are often self-funded or dependent on family support, and international competition requires extended training abroad
  • The talent pool is structurally constrained: snow sports are accessible only in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Ladakh, so almost all recruitment happens through units posted to those regions
  • Because biathlon is a Winter Olympic sport, it is one of the few disciplines where India's existing military ski infrastructure could plausibly translate into an Olympic pathway, though no Indian biathlete has yet reached that level

FAQs

Common questions about biathlon in India.

Who governs Biathlon in India?▾

We list Winter Games Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for Biathlon, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Biathlon an Olympic sport?▾

Yes, Biathlon is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by Winter Games Federation of India against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.

How do I start playing Biathlon in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under Winter Games Federation of India. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Biathlon athletes?▾

TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Biathlon is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Biathlon does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
