Bodybuilding is listed on SportSupport in the strength category. Its recorded origin is Modern. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list IBBF as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Bodybuilding has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through IBBF may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.

Central, state and private scholarships available for bodybuilding athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Stipend, boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to bodybuilding.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given bodybuilding event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.

  • State sports quota and government employment

Many states reserve government and public-sector posts for national-level medallists. Which bodybuilding events and which certifying bodies a state accepts varies by state, so check your state's current notification.

Rules

Competitive bodybuilding is judged, not timed or scored on lifting. Athletes compete within weight or height categories and are assessed on muscular development, symmetry, proportion, definition and stage presentation. Judging runs through compulsory poses (front and back double biceps, chest and lat spreads, side chest and triceps, abdominals and thighs), comparison rounds where judges call athletes out side by side, and an individual free-posing routine. Category winners then face off for the overall title. Physique divisions such as Men's Physique and Women's Physique use their own reduced posing formats and attire rules. Competitions run under the Indian Body Builders Federation domestically and WBPF/IFBB rules internationally, with anti-doping testing conducted under the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).

Authoritative rulebook: IBBF. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across strength sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced bodybuilding squad list.

  • Snatch
Single-movement lift from floor to overhead — Olympic weightlifting event.
  • Clean & jerk
Two-stage lift to the shoulders then overhead — Olympic weightlifting event.
  • Squat / bench / deadlift
The three powerlifting disciplines contested by weight class.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in bodybuilding at a federation-recognised event.

  • Competition posing trunks or physique shorts / women's two-piece attire per category rules
  • Regulation posing platform and stage lighting
  • Judging panel scorecards and comparison-round callout sheets
  • Calibrated scales and height measures for category classification
  • Anti-doping sample collection facilities at NADA-tested events

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in bodybuilding.

  • Mr. India / Senior National Bodybuilding Championship

India's most prestigious domestic title, organized by the Indian Body Builders Federation (IBBF), reported as recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports for the sport and by the Sports Authority of India and the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) — the year of that recognition is not recorded in our source, and Ministry recognition is granted year by year, so no current-year status is claimed. The 15th edition (2024) was held in Ludhiana, Punjab, won overall by Ram Niwas Malik of Haryana; the 16th (2025) was held in Belagavi, Karnataka, won by C. Rahul of the Railway Sports Promotion Board.

  • Junior / Masters / Divyang National Championship

A separate national championship covering junior, masters and para (Divyang) categories, alongside a Federation Cup and women's physique and model physique events. IBBF states that female participation has risen significantly over the years.

  • State and regional championships

A dense state-level circuit feeds the nationals, including long-running titles such as Mr. Manipur (organized by the All Manipur Body Builders Association across nine senior weight categories) and Mr. Saraighat in Assam.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in bodybuilding.

  • WBPF World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship

Chitharesh Natesan ('The Indian Monster'), from Kochi, won Mr. Universe at the 2019 edition in South Korea — the first Indian to win the title. Havildar Anuj Kumar Taliyan of the Indian Army won gold at the 11th World Championships in Jeju, South Korea, in November 2019. Mumbai hosted the 2014 WBPF World Championship.

  • Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship

Anuj Kumar won gold at the 54th edition in the Maldives (2022). Mukesh Singh Gehlot took silver in 2012.

  • Mr. Amateur Olympia

Suhas Khamkar became the first Indian bodybuilder to earn an IFBB Pro Card by winning the overall title in October 2018. He had earlier become the first Indian to win the Mr. Asia contest in 2010.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for bodybuilding. The national championship under IBBF remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in bodybuilding — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Institutional employment is the most established pathway — the Railway Sports Promotion Board, Indian Army and other public-sector sports boards recruit bodybuilders under the sports quota, and IBBF notes athletes in its competitions are eligible for National Sports Awards
  • Suhas Khamkar, a ten-time Mr. India from Kolhapur, was an employee of Central Railway and the first Indian bodybuilder to win a national gold at the Railway national competitions
  • Mir Mohtesham Ali Khan was recruited into South Central Railway under the sports quota, won Mr. India twice and a Mr. World silver, and was later appointed IBBF's youngest coach — illustrating the athlete-to-coach pathway
  • Yatinder Singh's career shows the sport's physical risk: a serious training accident in 2005 kept him out for three years before he returned to win Mr. India 2016 and a World Championship silver in 2015
  • Junaid Kaliwala became India's first IFBB Men's Physique Pro in 2017, opening a distinct competitive category alongside traditional bodybuilding
  • India's broader fitness industry has expanded substantially over the past two decades, creating allied careers in personal training, gym ownership and sports nutrition

FAQs

Common questions about bodybuilding in India.

Who governs Bodybuilding in India?▾

We list IBBF as the Indian governing/organising body for Bodybuilding, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Bodybuilding an Olympic sport?▾

No, Bodybuilding is not on the Olympic programme.

How do I start playing Bodybuilding in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under IBBF. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Bodybuilding athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Bodybuilding is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Bodybuilding does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
