Bungee jumping is a free fall from a fixed platform, crane or bridge while attached to an elastic cord calibrated to the jumper's body weight, so that the cord stretches and recoils to arrest the fall before the drop zone. There is no scoring, no course and no head-to-head format: a jump is a single supervised event run to a fixed operating procedure — weigh-in, harness and ankle-attachment fitting, independent check by a second crew member, jump master countdown, jump, then recovery from the rebound and lowering to the drop zone. Variants run from the standard forward dive to backward and tandem jumps, and the same platforms often host a valley rope swing, which is a pendulum arc rather than a vertical drop. Safety control comes from cord selection by weight band, redundant attachment, platform load engineering and crew certification rather than from any competitive rulebook.
Authoritative rulebook: Adventure Tour Operators Association.
Positions

- Full-body harness plus ankle attachment, giving redundant connection to the cord
- Fixed cantilever platform or crane rated for dynamic loads, with anchor points inspected on a schedule
- Drop-zone recovery system — lowering line and shallow-water or mat landing area with retrieval crew
- Weighing scale at check-in, plus a written medical declaration and consent form

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in bungee jumping.
- No competitive structure
Bungee jumping in India has no national federation, no championship circuit and no competitive ranking — it is a commercial adventure activity run by private operators under state tourism approvals rather than a sport with a governing body. This distinguishes it from the air sports, which sit under the Aero Club of India or the DGCA.
- Jumpin Heights, Mohanchatti
India's first fixed-platform bungee operation, roughly 25km from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, founded by former Army officer Capt. Rahul Nigam and designed by New Zealander David Allardice. The 83-metre cantilever platform is built over a rocky gorge above the Hyul, a tributary of the Ganga, and jumpers are lowered to a drop zone in shallow water. The same site runs a valley rope swing from the same platform and a 1km flying fox reaching around 160kmph.
- Other sites and conflicting height claims
Jumpin Heights is consistently described as India's highest fixed-platform jump at 83 metres, but other Rishikesh-area operators advertise jumps of 106 and 120 metres, with a Shivpuri site claimed as the tallest in Uttarakhand. The 83-metre figure is specific to fixed-platform operation and should not be read as the tallest jump of any kind. Operators also run sites in Goa and Manali.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in bungee jumping.
- How the Indian standard was set
When commercial bungee began in India there were no official regulations, because the activity had never been practised at formal scale here. Jumpin Heights adapted Australian and New Zealand Standards Authority guidelines, and those imported standards became the de facto safety standard for bungee in India — an unusual case of a private operator writing the national rulebook by default. The government subsequently issued norms requiring operators to meet safety requirements.
- Audit and crew standards
The Rishikesh operation reports external safety audits twice yearly, with a New Zealand-led audit conducted in May 2024. Jump masters are certified only after overseeing around 25,000 jumps across three years in supporting roles before running jumps independently.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in bungee jumping — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Eligibility criteria are strict and worth checking before booking: minimum age 12, with parental consent required under 18, and a weight band commonly given as 35-110kg — though published ranges vary between 35-110kg, 40-110kg and 35-120kg across operator and listing sites
- Medical exclusions are extensive — heart conditions, high blood pressure, epilepsy and neurological disorders, recent fractures, bone or joint injuries, back or neck problems, asthma, osteoporosis and pregnancy. Older participants are typically cleared only at the jump master's discretion and may be asked to sign an additional declaration
- Every jumper is weighed before the jump because cord elasticity is calibrated to body weight, and harness fitting is inspected before each jump cycle — the weighing is a safety control, not a formality
- Reported jump totals vary considerably across sources, from around 10,000 to over 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh jumps, all cited alongside claims of no accidents; the inconsistency is worth noting when assessing operator marketing
- The career path is in operations rather than competition: jump master, safety crew, platform engineering and maintenance, and adventure tourism management, with the long apprenticeship before independent jump mastering making it a genuine specialist trade
- Practitioners themselves emphasise that safety depends on the operator rather than the activity, and that height adds thrill rather than safety — advice worth heeding given the range of operators now working across India

FAQs
Common questions about bungee jumping in India.
Who governs Bungee Jumping in India?▾
We list Adventure Tour Operators Association as the Indian governing/organising body for Bungee Jumping, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Bungee Jumping an Olympic sport?▾
No, Bungee Jumping is not on the Olympic programme.
What government schemes support Bungee Jumping athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Bungee Jumping is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Bungee Jumping does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
