Canoeing is listed on SportSupport in the aquatic category. Its recorded origin is Indigenous. It is on the Olympic programme. We list Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Canoeing is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell. Canoeing appears on the official Khelo India Games discipline list as "Kayaking and Canoeing", so junior talent identified by the discipline's selectors can be considered under Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID). Scholarships & Funding
Central, state and private scholarships available for canoeing athletes in India.
- Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)
Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.
- Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)
Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether canoeing is among the covered disciplines.
- National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to canoeing.
- Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons
Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Canoe racing is paddled from a high kneeling position on one knee with a single-bladed paddle and no rudder, the boat steered entirely by stroke and edge. Sprint canoe (C1, C2, C4) is contested in buoyed lanes over 200m, 500m and 1000m, with paddlers required to hold their lane and finish bow-first; interference or wash-hanging brings disqualification. Canoe slalom crews descend a whitewater course through 18-25 numbered gates in sequence, incurring 2-second penalties for a gate touch and 50 seconds for a missed gate. Boats and paddles must meet International Canoe Federation length and minimum-weight rules, and dragon boat and para-canoe (va'a and outrigger) events run under their own crew and classification formats.
Authoritative rulebook: Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in canoeing — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- A significant recent development: THDC India Limited (a major hydropower public sector company) and IKCA launched a joint High-Performance Academy at Koteshwar, Tehri (Uttarakhand) in 2024 — athlete hostels, a residential complex and dedicated training infrastructure already built, explicitly aimed at Olympic, World Championship and Asian Games medals. A genuine corporate-sponsorship development model for the sport.
- IKCA's current president, Prashant Kushwaha, also serves as President of the Asian Canoe Confederation — giving India a real leadership role in the sport's regional governance
- Playing pathway through IKCA's state associations and national championships
- The sport remains genuinely developing at the grassroots/recreational level in India — outside competitive flat-water paddling, recreational canoeing has historically been limited, often treated as a one-time tourist activity rather than an ongoing pursuit

FAQs
Common questions about canoeing in India.
Who governs Canoeing in India?▾
We list Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association as the Indian governing/organising body for Canoeing, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Canoeing an Olympic sport?▾
Yes, Canoeing is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.
How do I start playing Canoeing in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Canoeing athletes?▾
TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Canoeing is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Canoeing appears on the official Khelo India Games discipline list as "Kayaking and Canoeing", so athletes identified by the discipline's selectors can be considered under Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID). Appearing on the list is not itself a grant of funding.
