Curling is listed on SportSupport in the winter category. Its recorded origin is Scotland. It is on the Olympic programme. We list Curling Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Curling is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through Curling Federation of India against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.
Scholarships & Funding
Central, state and private scholarships available for curling athletes in India.
- Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)
Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.
- Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)
Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether curling is among the covered disciplines.
- National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to curling.
- Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons
Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Curling is played on a sheet of prepared pebbled ice by two teams of four (or two players in mixed doubles), who alternate delivering stones towards concentric rings called the house. An end is complete when all stones have been thrown, and the team with the stone closest to the centre scores one point for each of its stones nearer the button than the opposition's best; games run over eight or ten ends, or six in mixed doubles. Sweepers travelling with the stone influence its distance and curl by polishing the ice ahead of it, and the stone must be released before the hog line or it is removed from play. The free guard zone rule restricts the removal of early guard stones, and the last-stone advantage (the hammer) passes to the team that did not score in the previous end. World Curling governs the sport internationally and sets ice, stone and equipment specifications.
Authoritative rulebook: Curling Federation of India. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in curling.
- National Curling Championships
Held at Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, which has the cold, snow and ice conditions the sport needs. Organised by the Curling Federation of India (CFI), established in 2010 and admitted to the World Curling Federation in 2019.
- Khelo India Winter Games
Curling was contested at Gulmarg as part of the 2023 edition, giving the sport a place in India's flagship winter sports programme alongside alpine skiing, snowboarding and Nordic events.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in curling.
- Pan Continental Curling Championships
India's men's team finished second in the B-Division at the 2022 edition — the country's strongest result in the sport to date.
- World Curling Tour
India's mixed doubles pair took silver at the 2022 Kazakhstan Curling Cup WCT Mixed Doubles event, a World Curling Tour fixture.
- Asian Winter Games
Curling has been contested at the Asian Winter Games in 2003, 2007, 2017 and 2025, with mixed doubles added in 2025. India has not fielded a curling team — at Harbin 2025 India sent its largest-ever winter contingent of 59 athletes across six sports, but curling was not among them. The 2025 men's title went to the Philippines, their first Asian Winter Games medal of any colour.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in curling — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Curling is at an early stage in India and World Curling itself describes the country as an emerging curling nation — CFI's stated mission is still to introduce the sport to new communities and build a regional championship structure
- Gulmarg is effectively the sport's only natural home in India, which ties the domestic calendar to a short winter window and to the same snowfall that has repeatedly disrupted Khelo India Winter Games scheduling
- India has no dedicated curling rink of international standard, so competitive preparation depends on training abroad or on improvised ice, a constraint shared with other emerging Asian curling nations
- The clearest openings are in playing at national level with a realistic route into the national team given the small player pool, alongside coaching and officiating as CFI builds out its championship structure
- Because curling is a Winter Olympic sport, sustained development would give India a rare Olympic pathway in a winter discipline where it currently has none

FAQs
Common questions about curling in India.
Who governs Curling in India?▾
We list Curling Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for Curling, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Curling an Olympic sport?▾
Yes, Curling is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by Curling Federation of India against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.
How do I start playing Curling in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under Curling Federation of India. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Curling athletes?▾
TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Curling is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Curling does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
