Disc golf follows the logic of golf with flying discs: each hole is played from a tee pad toward an elevated metal basket, and the aim is to complete the hole in the fewest throws. Play proceeds from the lie where the previous throw came to rest, the player furthest from the target throws first, and a hole is complete when the disc comes to rest supported by the basket's chains or tray. Rules are set by the Professional Disc Golf Association and cover stance and marking the lie, out-of-bounds and mandatory routes, penalty throws, and a limit on time taken per throw. Courses are usually 9 or 18 holes with par set per hole, and scoring uses the same under/over-par convention as golf. Unlike ultimate frisbee there is no team play, no opposing defence and no contest for possession — it is an individual target sport.

Positions
Typical roles across emerging sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced disc golf squad list.
- Attacker / offensive roleThe point-scoring position in the sport's playing format.
- DefenderPrevents the opposition from scoring and controls the defensive zone.
- All-rounder / substituteRotates through roles or comes in as a tactical substitute.
Equipment
Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in disc golf at a federation-recognised event.
- Set of discs: distance drivers, fairway drivers, mid-ranges and putters, each with different flight characteristics
- Permanent chain baskets (targets) installed on the course — the main infrastructure requirement
- Marked tee pads, plus a mini marker disc for marking the lie
- Bag or backpack to carry discs, and a scorecard or UDisc-style scoring app
- No clubs, balls, or fairway maintenance of the kind golf requires — open parkland or wooded ground suffices
Governing/organising body

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in disc golf.
- Disc Golf India Association
Founded on 20 February 2020 in New Delhi by Anand K. Verma, a PDGA member, with the stated aim of growing disc golf across India. It operates at very small scale and there is no established national championship circuit, no state association structure and no government recognition.
- Course infrastructure — the core constraint
UDisc ranks India 74th among disc golf countries, with a single course in the entire country. For comparison, the United States has over 9,000 courses and accounts for roughly three-quarters of all disc golf courses worldwide. With one course nationally, there is effectively no domestic competitive calendar.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in disc golf.
- PDGA structure
Disc golf's global governing body is the Professional Disc Golf Association, founded in 1976 and headquartered in Appling, Georgia. It is a non-profit membership organisation that sets the rules, sanctions tournaments, maintains player ratings and runs the course directory. Indian players can join as individual PDGA members and receive a PDGA number regardless of whether a national federation exists.
- Indian participation
No documented Indian results at PDGA Major or World Championship level were found in available sources. Participation to date has been through individual PDGA membership rather than a national team.
Leagues
No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for disc golf. The national championship under Disc Golf Association of India remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in disc golf — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Disc golf is at an earlier stage in India than almost any other sport covered here — a single course, an association founded in 2020, and no national championship means there is currently no competitive pathway to speak of
- The barrier is land and baskets rather than skill: a course needs 9 or 18 permanent targets across open ground, and the standard chain basket design descends from the Mach 1 Disc Pole Hole developed by Ed Headrick, who coined and trademarked the term 'disc golf' and whose company became the PDGA's technical standard
- The sport is unusually cheap to play once a course exists — a few discs are all a player needs — which is why growth elsewhere has followed course construction rather than equipment access
- The realistic contribution right now is course development: approaching parks departments, schools and resorts about installing baskets, which is how the sport spread in every country where it has taken hold
- Individual PDGA membership is open to Indian players and provides a rating, rules access and eligibility for sanctioned events abroad — the most direct route to competitive play while domestic infrastructure is absent
- Anyone considering the sport should be aware it currently offers no scholarships, no sports-quota pathway, no federation recognition and no national selection

FAQs
Common questions about disc golf in India.
Who governs Disc Golf in India?▾
We list Disc Golf Association of India as the Indian governing/organising body for Disc Golf, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Disc Golf an Olympic sport?▾
No, Disc Golf is not on the Olympic programme.
What government schemes support Disc Golf athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Disc Golf is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Disc Golf does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
