Drag Racing is listed on SportSupport in the motor category. Its recorded origin is Mid-20th century USA. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Drag Racing has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through FMSCI may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for drag racing athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Stipend, boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to drag racing.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given drag racing event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.

  • State sports quota and government employment

Many states reserve government and public-sector posts for national-level medallists. Which drag racing events and which certifying bodies a state accepts varies by state, so check your state's current notification.

Rules

Drag racing is a straight-line acceleration contest between two vehicles over a fixed distance — the quarter mile (402m) at full-length events, or a shortened 201m where run-off room is limited. Cars or motorcycles stage at a start line, launch on a countdown light tree, and results are decided on elapsed time and trap speed, with a false start (jumping the lights) disqualifying the offender. Competitors run in classes grouped by vehicle type, engine capacity, forced induction and level of modification — showroom stock and street stock at the bottom of the ladder, through engine-swapped and modified categories, up to unrestricted classes. In India events are sanctioned by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India, and because the sport needs only a long straight rather than a circuit, meets are typically held on airstrips and airfield runways.

Authoritative rulebook: FMSCI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across motor sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced drag racing squad list.

  • Driver / rider
Competes for the fastest time or best finishing position.
  • Co-driver / navigator (rally)
Reads the pace notes and manages the stage plan.
  • Team & pit crew
Race engineer, mechanic, strategist and pit-stop crew.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in drag racing at a federation-recognised event.

  • A road car or motorcycle — genuinely unmodified vehicles are eligible in showroom stock and street stock classes
  • Approved helmet, and for four-wheelers a fire-resistant race suit, gloves and shoes in the faster classes
  • Harnesses, roll cage and battery cut-off for heavily modified and unrestricted-class cars
  • Drag radial or slick tyres for competitive classes; standard tyres are permitted in stock categories
  • Timing transponder and scrutineering-passed vehicle documentation
  • An FMSCI competition licence, or a one-event licence for first-timers, plus a personal accident insurance policy where the event regulations require it

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in drag racing.

  • Indian National Drag Racing Championship (INDRC)

Drag races ran in India from the 1990s but no national championship existed until 2011, when Spitfire Motorsports and Speedway Motorsports organised the first FMSCI-sanctioned edition in Hyderabad. The 2025 four-wheeler championship ran five rounds, with Rounds 1 and 2 held at Taneja Aerospace in Hosur in April. A separate FMSCI national motorcycle drag racing championship runs alongside it, with rounds staged by the Madras Motor Sports Club.

  • Vroom Drag Meet

India's largest FMSCI-approved open drag event, which completed its 13th edition in December 2025. It runs categories for two-wheelers, four-wheelers, EVs and a dedicated Women in Motorsports class, and has hosted record runs alongside the national championship.

  • The Valley Run

Held at Aamby Valley's private airstrip near Lonavla, one of the few non-Hosur venues in India with an airfield-class straight. The 2019 edition drew over 600 competitors and the 11th edition in December 2023 had more than 750 participants across 72 classes, split by Indian car, engine-swapped Indian car, foreign car, Indian bike, foreign bike, diesel car and separate categories for women drivers and riders.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in drag racing.

  • National records

India's quarter-mile record has fallen repeatedly in recent seasons. Sean Rogers Pachigalla set 9.215 seconds in a twin-turbo Audi R8 at the Valley Run in 2024, then improved to 8.948 seconds at the INDRC round in Hosur in April 2025 and 8.849 seconds at the Vroom Drag Meet support event the same weekend. By December 2025 the mark stood at 8.693 seconds, set at Hosur.

  • Domestic scale

Indian drag racing has no international championship pathway comparable to rallying or circuit racing — the sport is domestically self-contained, with records and titles decided at FMSCI-sanctioned meets rather than through overseas competition.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for drag racing. The national championship under FMSCI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in drag racing — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Drag racing is the most accessible form of motorsport in India — unmodified road cars and motorcycles can enter under showroom stock and street stock classes, and organisers describe it as the ideal entry point for novices, with an FMSCI one-event licence available for competitors who do not hold a full competition licence
  • Entries are managed through a dedicated app covering class selection, licence verification, scrutineering booking, indemnity and payment — a level of digital process rare in Indian club motorsport
  • Competitors frequently race alongside other professions: Rizwan Khan, an orthopaedic doctor from Mysuru, won the Superbikes unrestricted class riding a BMW HP4 Competition at 9.746 seconds, and Jagan Kumar has doubled up as national track racing champion and a drag winner for TVS Racing
  • Tuning workshops are a genuine allied business — the fastest cars at Indian meets are shop-built machines, such as the Evolve Automotive-tuned BMW M5 that was quickest at the 2019 Valley Run at 10.352 seconds
  • Infrastructure remains the sport's constraint. Only a handful of venues have the roughly one kilometre of straight required, and the 2016 national championship had to cancel its second and third rounds at Sriperumbudur after imported timing equipment failed, with titles awarded on the basis of the opening round alone
  • Safety provisioning at major meets is substantial — the Valley Run's regulations required fire extinguishers every 100 metres, a tow truck and flatbed at the start, two ambulances with doctor and paramedic, a helicopter paramedic team on standby, and a personal accident policy of at least ₹4 lakh from every competitor

FAQs

Common questions about drag racing in India.

Who governs Drag Racing in India?▾

We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for Drag Racing, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Drag Racing an Olympic sport?▾

No, Drag Racing is not on the Olympic programme.

How do I start playing Drag Racing in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under FMSCI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Drag Racing athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Drag Racing is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Drag Racing does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
