Endurance Riding is listed on SportSupport in the equestrian category. Its recorded origin is Modern. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list EFI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Endurance Riding has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through EFI may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.
Scholarships & Funding
Central, state and private scholarships available for endurance riding athletes in India.
- Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)
Stipend, boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.
- National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to endurance riding.
- Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons
Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given endurance riding event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.
- State sports quota and government employment
Many states reserve government and public-sector posts for national-level medallists. Which endurance riding events and which certifying bodies a state accepts varies by state, so check your state's current notification.

Endurance riding is a long-distance timed race against the clock over marked natural terrain, in which horse welfare is a scored condition of competition rather than an afterthought. FEI rides run at distances up to 160km in a single day, split into phases of roughly 40km. Each phase ends at a compulsory 'vet gate' where the horse's heart-rate recovery, gait, hydration and metabolic condition are inspected; a horse failing inspection is eliminated regardless of position. Riding time plus mandatory hold times determine the result, and the winner is the first horse to finish that is also passed fit to continue. Crewing at designated points is permitted, and the guiding principle is that the horse must finish in good condition, not merely finish first.
Authoritative rulebook: EFI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in endurance riding.
- National Endurance Championship
One of five disciplines run under the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI), which joined the FEI in 1971. EFI deliberately rotates its National Championships to a different venue each year to spread access. The discipline's modern Indian history begins in Assam, where a National Endurance competition was held in 2001.
- Assam and the Eastern Himalayan Ride
Assam has been the centre of endurance riding in India. In 2003 the Equestrian Federation of Assam — formed in the mid-1990s — staged India's first International Endurance competition under FEI rules, run on borrowed horses, with more than 50 horses and riders from nine countries. It was a landmark that restarted the sport nationally on a scale not previously seen, and in March 2009 the FEI sanctioned a further international championship in the state, the Eastern Himalayan Ride.
- General O.P. Malhotra Memorial Trophy
Awarded annually to the Best Rider at the Assam State Equestrian Championships, commemorating General Om Prakash Malhotra — 13th Chief of the Army Staff, later Ambassador to Indonesia and Governor of Punjab, founder President of the Asian Equestrian Federation and EFI President for nine years, whose lobbying brought equestrian sport into the Asian Games.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in endurance riding.
- Asian Games
Endurance featured at the Asian Games only once, at Doha 2006, with individual and team events.
- FEI Endurance World Championship
The premier international endurance events are the FEI World Endurance Championships and the endurance competition at the FEI World Equestrian Games, run over 160km with compulsory veterinary gates. The discipline is dominated by the UAE and European nations; documented Indian results at these championships were not found in available sources, and India's international involvement has centred on hosting FEI-sanctioned rides in Assam rather than on results abroad.
Leagues
No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for endurance riding. The national championship under EFI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in endurance riding — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Endurance is judged as much on horse welfare as on speed — courses are divided into phases of roughly 40km, each ending at a compulsory 'vet gate' where the horse must pass a veterinary inspection to continue, and the emphasis is on finishing in good condition rather than simply finishing first. The sport's history explains why: at the 1902 Brussels-to-Ostend ride, 16 of the 60 horses that started died of exhaustion
- Assam's Retraining of Racehorses project, an FEI Solidarity programme, trains local horse trainers to convert retired racehorses to sport use — the Equestrian Federation of Assam won the FEI Solidarity Award in 2017 for it, and the pilot was successful enough that FEI Solidarity trained a group of tutors across Southeast Asia in 2018 to replicate the model. It directly addresses India's core constraint by widening the pool of available horses
- That project also creates genuine allied careers — horse retraining, coaching and producing horses to elementary dressage, 1.10m jumping or FEI one-star eventing standard
- Endurance is comparatively accessible within Indian equestrian sport because it does not require a purpose-bred imported jumping or dressage horse, though top international competition is dominated by pure-bred Arabians and Anglo-Arabs
- Veterinary work is a career in itself here — EFI lists improving the standard of event vets among its stated development priorities, and endurance depends on qualified veterinary officials more than any other equestrian discipline

FAQs
Common questions about endurance riding in India.
Who governs Endurance Riding in India?▾
We list EFI as the Indian governing/organising body for Endurance Riding, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Endurance Riding an Olympic sport?▾
No, Endurance Riding is not on the Olympic programme.
How do I start playing Endurance Riding in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under EFI. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Endurance Riding athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Endurance Riding is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Endurance Riding does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
