Eventing is an equestrian triathlon: one horse-and-rider combination contests dressage, cross-country and show jumping. The dressage test scores accuracy and obedience through a set sequence of movements, converted into penalty points. Cross-country is ridden over fixed natural obstacles against an optimum time, with 11 penalties for a refusal, 20 for a second, and elimination for a fall of horse or rider or a third refusal; time faults accrue at 0.4 per second over the optimum. Show jumping follows, with 4 penalties per knockdown and 1 per second over time. The lowest cumulative penalty score wins.
