Footgolf is played on a golf course with a size-5 football: the player kicks from a tee toward an oversized cup (usually 21 inches across) cut into the ground, and the aim is to hole out in the fewest kicks. The ball is played from where it comes to rest, the player furthest from the hole plays first, and holes carry a par as in golf with the same under/over-par scoring. It is non-contact and mixed-sex, and rounds are far quicker than golf because there is no club selection and no putting stroke. Unlike football there is no goalkeeper, no opposition and no possession contest; unlike disc golf the target is a ground cup rather than a chain basket, and unlike futsal it is an individual outdoor target sport rather than an indoor team game.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in footgolf.
- No FIFG member federation in India
The Federation for International FootGolf recognises exactly one national organisation per country, and India does not appear on its published member list, which spans some thirty countries across Europe, the Americas, Africa and East Asia including Japan, Korea and Malaysia. No documented Indian national footgolf championship or governing body was found in available sources.
- The infrastructure already exists
Unlike most emerging sports, footgolf needs no new facilities — it is played on existing golf courses using the same fairways with wider cups cut for the football, which is why it spread quickly in countries with established golf infrastructure. India has a substantial golf-course network under the Indian Golf Union, so the constraint here is course willingness and organisation rather than construction.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in footgolf.
- FIFG FootGolf World Cup
The championship has grown rapidly: eight countries at the first edition in Hungary in 2012, over 230 players from 26 nations in Argentina in 2016, 520 players from 33 countries in Morocco in 2018, and 972 players from 39 countries at Orlando in 2023. The 2026 edition is scheduled for Acapulco, Mexico. France, Argentina and France took the men's, senior men's and women's titles at the most recent championship.
- Route for players without a national federation
FIFG operates a World Tour with world and regional rankings, and explicitly provides a pathway for players from countries with no FIFG member to apply for a World Tour licence directly through its World Tour Committee — currently the only realistic competitive route for an Indian player.
- Regional events
The nearest significant competition to India is the Sharjah International FootGolf Championship in the UAE, whose second edition drew 130 players across four categories competing for a combined purse of $30,000 at the Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club.
Leagues
No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for footgolf. The national championship under Footgolf Federation of India remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in footgolf — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Footgolf is among the cheapest sports to take up — a size-5 football and turf or indoor football shoes are the entire kit, with no clubs, discs or specialist equipment required
- It is quicker to play and faster to learn than golf, non-contact and mixed-sex, which makes it well suited to casual and family participation as well as competition
- The sport was created in the Netherlands in 2008 by Bas Korsten and Michael Jansen, loosely based on a post-training game played by Korsten's brother, the professional footballer Willem Korsten; FIFG was formed in 2012 and gained Observer status with the Global Association of International Sports Federations in October 2017
- There is currently no Indian federation, no national ranking, no sports-quota pathway and no scholarship route — anyone serious about competing would need to approach FIFG directly for a World Tour licence
- The clearest way to build the sport in India is at course level: persuading golf clubs to cut footgolf cups and host rounds, which is how the sport established itself everywhere it now has a federation

FAQs
Common questions about footgolf in India.
Who governs Footgolf in India?▾
We list Footgolf Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for Footgolf, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Footgolf an Olympic sport?▾
No, Footgolf is not on the Olympic programme.
What government schemes support Footgolf athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Footgolf is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Footgolf does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
