Formula E is listed on SportSupport in the motor category. Its recorded origin is 2014. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Formula E has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through FMSCI may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for formula e athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Stipend, boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to formula e.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given formula e event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.

  • State sports quota and government employment

Many states reserve government and public-sector posts for national-level medallists. Which formula e events and which certifying bodies a state accepts varies by state, so check your state's current notification.

Rules

Formula E is the FIA's all-electric single-seater world championship, raced almost entirely on temporary street circuits. It is a spec series — every team runs the same chassis and battery, so competition turns on drivers, powertrain software, energy management and race-day setup. Races are run to a set duration plus one lap rather than a fixed lap count, and energy conservation is central: drivers lift and coast, and use slipstreams to save battery. Qualifying is run in group stages followed by knockout duels. Attack Mode gives a temporary power boost in exchange for driving through an off-line activation zone, and Fanboost-era gimmicks have given way to energy-based strategy. Regenerative braking recovers a substantial share of race energy, and there are no mid-race battery swaps in the current generation of cars.

Authoritative rulebook: FMSCI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across motor sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced formula e squad list.

  • Driver / rider
Competes for the fastest time or best finishing position.
  • Co-driver / navigator (rally)
Reads the pace notes and manages the stage plan.
  • Team & pit crew
Race engineer, mechanic, strategist and pit-stop crew.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in formula e at a federation-recognised event.

  • Spec electric single-seater — common chassis and battery supplied to all teams, with team-developed powertrain and software
  • All-weather treaded tyres from a single supplier, used in both dry and wet conditions
  • FIA-homologated helmet, HANS device, fire-resistant race suit, gloves and boots
  • High-voltage safety equipment and trained crew for battery handling in the garage
  • Energy-management telemetry and simulator time, which carries unusual weight in a spec series
  • An FIA licence earned through junior single-seater categories, plus an eLicence for Formula E specifically

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in formula e.

  • Hyderabad Street Circuit

A 2.835km, 18-turn temporary street circuit laid out around the Secretariat Complex and through Lumbini Park on the banks of Hussain Sagar Lake. Built for around ₹140 crore by Driven International, it opened in November 2022 and closed after the February 2023 race. It also hosted a round of the Indian Racing League in 2022. Norman Nato holds the lap record at 1:14.698 in a Nissan e-4ORCE 04.

  • Mahindra Racing

The only Indian team in the Formula E paddock and a founding entrant, present since the championship's first season. Mahindra had pushed for a home race since the series began, and remained one of Formula E's major Indian partners alongside Tata Communications.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in formula e.

  • 2023 Greenko Hyderabad ePrix

India's only Formula E race to date, held on 11 February 2023 as round 4 of the 2022-23 season — and the country's first FIA World Championship motorsport event since the 2013 Indian Grand Prix. Jean-Éric Vergne won ahead of Nick Cassidy and António Félix da Costa, with Mitch Evans on pole. Attendance was around 31,000, with Sachin Tendulkar and Ram Charan among those present. Formula E later put the race's economic impact on the region at almost $84 million.

  • The 2024 cancellation

The second Hyderabad E-Prix, scheduled for 10 February 2024, was cancelled six weeks out. Telangana's BRS government — whose IT minister K. T. Rama Rao had driven the original bid — lost the December 2023 state election, and the incoming administration's Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department declined to fulfil the Host City Agreement signed on 30 October 2023. Formula E formally served notice of breach of contract. It would have been the only FIA World Championship event held in India that year, and no replacement venue was found, leaving a seven-week gap in the calendar.

  • Indian drivers

Karun Chandhok drove for Mahindra in Formula E's inaugural 2014-15 season. Jehan Daruvala joined Mahindra as test and reserve driver before securing a full-time race seat with Maserati MSG for 2024, and publicly described the cancelled Hyderabad round as the home race he had been looking forward to.

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for formula e. The national championship under FMSCI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in formula e — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Formula E's spec formula — identical chassis and battery for every team — shifts the competitive advantage toward drivers, race-day setup and software, which makes it a more level entry point for a nation without a deep motorsport engineering base than a fully open formula would be
  • Mahindra Racing's presence since season one gives Indian engineers, strategists and mechanics a genuine route into a world championship paddock without leaving an Indian employer
  • The Hyderabad experience is a cautionary case study in event risk: the race depended on a state government's political will, and a change of administration ended it despite a signed multi-year agreement, with title backer Greenko having already withdrawn after the first edition
  • Even the successful 2023 event drew criticism for infrastructure readiness, with construction continuing inside the paddock into the race weekend, and organisers had to ship track materials from a flood-cancelled Formula 4 event in Chennai to complete the Hyderabad circuit
  • The championship was pitched to India explicitly as an electric-vehicle showcase — Telangana framed it as support for EV adoption, and Formula E's leadership tied it to vehicle-pollution reduction, linking the sport to India's EV manufacturing ambitions rather than to motorsport alone

FAQs

Common questions about formula e in India.

Who governs Formula E in India?▾

We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for Formula E, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Formula E an Olympic sport?▾

No, Formula E is not on the Olympic programme.

How do I start playing Formula E in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under FMSCI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Formula E athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Formula E is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Formula E does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
