Formula One is listed on SportSupport in the motor category. Its recorded origin is 1950 Europe. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Formula One has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through FMSCI may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for formula one athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Stipend, boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to motorsport.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given motorsport event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.

  • State sports quota and government employment

Many states reserve government and public-sector posts for national-level medallists. Which motorsport events and which certifying bodies a state accepts varies by state, so check your state's current notification.

Rules

Formula One is contested over a season of Grands Prix, each run to a set race distance of roughly 305km (Monaco excepted) on closed circuits, with a two-hour race limit and a three-hour overall window. A weekend comprises practice sessions, a knockout qualifying session (Q1/Q2/Q3) that sets the grid, and the race; sprint weekends replace one practice with a short standalone race. Points are awarded to the top ten finishers (25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1), with a bonus point for the fastest lap under some regulations, feeding both the Drivers' and Constructors' championships. Cars must pass strict technical scrutineering on dimensions, weight, power unit and aerodynamic regulations, and cost-cap compliance. Every car must use at least two dry tyre compounds in a dry race. Penalties (time penalties, drive-throughs, grid drops) apply for causing collisions, unsafe releases, track-limit abuse, speeding in the pit lane and ignoring flags; safety car and red-flag procedures govern racing during incidents. In India, national-level car racing and rallying are run to FIA-derived regulations administered by the FMSCI.

Authoritative rulebook: FMSCI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in formula one.

  • FMSCI Indian National Car Racing Championship / Indian National Rally Championship

Organized by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), which was recognized as India's national motorsport federation by the Government of India only in 2019.

  • Formula Maruti (historical)

A grassroots single-seater series using the 800cc engine from India's first mass-produced car, pioneered by S. Karivardhan — widely called the 'Father of Indian Motorsports' — and served as the launchpad for both Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok before the series ended in 2006. Coimbatore's motor racing circuit is named in Karivardhan's honour.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in formula one.

  • Formula One

Narain Karthikeyan became India's first F1 driver in 2005 (Jordan), scoring his and India's only-ever F1 championship points with a 4th-place finish at the chaotic 2005 United States Grand Prix — he remains the only driver from the Indian subcontinent to score F1 points to date. Karun Chandhok became India's second F1 driver. The Indian Grand Prix was held at the Buddh International Circuit from 2011, India's first home Formula One race.

  • A1GP / NASCAR

Karthikeyan won India's first-ever A1GP race at Zhuhai, China in 2007, and became the first Indian-born driver to compete in a NASCAR series the same year.

  • Narain Karthikeyan received the Padma Shri in 2010
  • Current rising talent Jehan Daruvala competes in the Red Bull Junior Team programme, having finished third in the 2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship
  • On the rallying side, Gaurav Gill (multiple APRC and INRC champion) became the sport's first-ever Arjuna Award recipient in 2019, the same year FMSCI gained federation status
  • His long-serving co-driver Musa Sherif has competed for 30 consecutive years across 296 rallies (67 of them international) alongside 50 different drivers — a remarkable career built entirely in the navigator's seat
  • Playing pathway through FMSCI-affiliated karting and grassroots single-seater programmes; coaching and team-engineering roles are additional pathways as India's motorsport infrastructure has grown

FAQs

Common questions about formula one in India.

Who governs Formula One in India?▾

We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for Formula One, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Formula One an Olympic sport?▾

No, Formula One is not on the Olympic programme.

How do I start playing Formula One in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under FMSCI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Formula One athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Formula One is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Formula One does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
