Rules

Gilli-danda is played with two wooden sticks: a short tapered gilli and a longer danda. The striker rests the gilli across a small hole in the ground (the guchhi) or balances it on a stone, flicks it into the air with the danda and then hits it as far as possible before fielders can catch it. A clean catch puts the striker out immediately — the rule usually cited as the ancestor of the catch-out in cricket. If the gilli lands untouched, the striker scores by hopping or measuring the distance from the hole to the gilli in danda lengths, and fielders may throw the gilli back at the hole or the danda to end the innings. Play can be individual or in teams, and the winner is decided on aggregate distance-based points. IGDF's 2017 rule book fixed scoring, ground dimensions and playing methods that had previously varied by region.

Authoritative rulebook: State associations.

Positions

Typical roles across traditional sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced gilli-danda squad list.

  • Raider / attacker
Traditional role responsible for scoring points in the opposition half.
  • Defender / anchor
Prevents the raider from returning and holds the defensive line.
  • All-rounder / captain
Both raids and defends; captain also runs on-field strategy.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in gilli-danda at a federation-recognised event.

  • Gilli: a tapered wooden stick roughly 3 to 6 inches long, pointed at both ends
  • Danda: a wooden striking stick roughly 1.5 to 3 feet long
  • Guchhi: a handspan-long hole scooped in the ground, or a stone used as a fulcrum
  • Open ground — no marked pitch, net or protective gear is required, making it among the cheapest sports to take up

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in gilli-danda.

  • National Gilli-Danda Championship

Organised by the Indian Gilli-Danda Federation (IGDF). The 5th edition ran from 1 to 3 May 2026 at Panjab University, Chandigarh, and was won by Rajasthan. A separate National Gilli-Danda Tournament for 2025-26 was held at Ghaziabad in Delhi NCR from 31 January to 1 February 2026 alongside the Indian Traditional Sports and Games Festival.

  • Governing bodies

The Gilli Danda International Federation (GDIF), founded in 2016 and headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, describes itself as the first governing body created specifically for the sport. The IGDF, its Indian arm, is registered as a non-profit trust rather than as a government-recognised national sports federation, and states that it is approved by the Association for National Sports Federations and is a member of the Association for International Sports for All, with further recognition claimed from the IOC, UNESCO, WHO and ICSSPE.

  • Rule standardisation

The sport had no uniform rules for most of its history — each region played its own way, which kept it informal. IGDF published an official rule book in 2017 under technical director BK Bharat, setting scoring, ground dimensions and playing methods. Gilli-danda was also included in the 2018 Ambedkar Games and features in the Bharatiya Khel programme run under the Indian Knowledge Systems division of the Ministry of Education.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in gilli-danda.

  • Regional spread

The game is played across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan, and reported as far afield as Cambodia, Cuba and Italy. It is known as danguli in Bengali and Assamese, chinni-dandu in Kannada, kuttiyum kolum in Malayalam, viti-dandu in Marathi, kitti-pullu in Tamil, guli-badi in Odia, iti-dakar in Sindhi, lappa-duggi in Pashto, alak-doulak in Persian and tip-cat in English.

  • Dandi biyo in Nepal

Nepal's near-identical version was the country's de facto national game until volleyball replaced it in 2017, and is now reported to be at risk of dying out — a warning of what happens to traditional games without institutional support.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for gilli-danda. The national championship under State associations remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in gilli-danda — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Gilli-danda may be more than 2,500 years old, with references placing it in the Mauryan period, and is widely described as a precursor to cricket in South Asia — the catch-out rule in particular is thought to have carried over into cricket and baseball
  • The sport carries a social history worth noting: it was once played on the streets by common people and sometimes by members of royal households, before social stigma pushed higher social strata away from it and left it as a game of the poor
  • It is one of the cheapest sports to take up anywhere — the gilli is a tapered stick of 3 to 6 inches, the danda 1.5 to 3 feet, and a handspan-long hole in the ground called the guchhi completes the setup, with no formal ground needed
  • Realistic involvement is through IGDF state and district units, school programmes and the traditional games festival circuit rather than through professional play; the federation has stated ambitions of international recognition but there is no salaried playing pathway
  • The game holds a real place in Indian cultural memory through Premchand's short story 'Gilli-Danda' and the Marathi film 'Vitti Dandu', which helps sustain interest even where organised play has faded
