Hapkido has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through Hapkido India may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.

- Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

- Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons
Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given hapkido event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.

Hapkido is a Korean self-defence art built on three principles — non-resistance (hwa), circular motion (won) and the water principle (yu) — combining joint locks, throws, pressure-point control, kicks and strikes. Competition formats vary by organization and typically include self-defence demonstration (technique pairs judged on control, accuracy and realism), forms/breaking (kyokpa), and sparring under padded-contact rules with rounds of one to two minutes. Techniques redirect an opponent's force rather than meeting it, and grading progresses through a coloured-belt system to black-belt dan ranks.
Authoritative rulebook: Hapkido India. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in hapkido.
- National Hapkido Championship
Organized annually by the Hapkido Federation of India (HFI, established 2011 in Jammu, J&K; recognized by the World Hapkido Confederation as India's national governing body, and by NYKS under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports), now in its 9th edition (2025, held in Rajasthan with over 500 athletes from 15 states). HFI reports a network of roughly 1,000 instructors across 16 states teaching an estimated 10 lakh (1 million) students nationally.
- Governance note
A separately-named 'Hapkido Boxing National Federation-India' also runs its own numbered national championship (11th edition, held in Chennai) for a related hybrid discipline — a distinct organization from HFI, not a rival claim to the same competition.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in hapkido.
- World Hapkido Confederation (WHC) events
HFI is affiliated to the WHC and has participated in international martial arts mastership events; specific Indian results at major international hapkido competitions were not clearly available in public reporting.
- Pending recognition
HFI has stated an ambition for hapkido to be included in All India Inter-University Games (AIU) and School Games Federation of India (SGFI) competitions — this recognition does not yet appear to be confirmed as achieved.
Leagues
No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for hapkido. The national championship under Hapkido India remains the top domestic competition.

FAQs
Common questions about hapkido in India.
Who governs Hapkido in India?▾
We list Hapkido India as the Indian governing/organising body for Hapkido, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Hapkido an Olympic sport?▾
No, Hapkido is not on the Olympic programme.
How do I start playing Hapkido in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under Hapkido India. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Hapkido athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Hapkido is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Hapkido does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
