Ice Hockey is listed on SportSupport in the winter category. Its recorded origin is 19th century Canada. It is on the Olympic programme. We list IHAI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Ice Hockey is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through IHAI against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for ice hockey athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)

Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether ice hockey is among the covered disciplines.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to ice hockey.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Rules

Ice hockey is played by two teams of six on ice (five skaters plus a goaltender), over three 20-minute periods of stopped clock time, with the puck advanced by stick and goals scored by putting it fully across the goal line. Offside (entering the attacking zone ahead of the puck) and icing (shooting the puck from behind centre across the opponent's goal line untouched) stop play; infractions such as tripping, high-sticking, boarding or interference send the offender to the penalty box for two minutes or more, leaving their team short-handed on a power play. Line changes happen on the fly, and tied games in knockout play go to overtime and then a shootout. International play follows IIHF rules, which prohibit fighting and mandate full protective equipment.

Authoritative rulebook: IHAI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across winter sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced ice hockey squad list.

  • Alpine / cross-country / snowboard
Timed and judged snow disciplines under FIS rules.
  • Skating & ice hockey
Speed skating, figure skating and ice hockey under ISU / IIHF.
  • Sliding sports
Bobsleigh, luge and skeleton contested on ice tracks.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in ice hockey at a federation-recognised event.

  • Ice skates and a certified helmet with full face cage
  • Hockey stick (goaltenders use a wider blocker-style stick)
  • Shoulder, elbow and shin pads, hockey pants, gloves and neck guard
  • Mouthguard and protective cup
  • Goaltender kit: leg pads, chest protector, blocker, catching glove and mask
  • Puck and access to an indoor or natural outdoor rink

Governing/organising body

Body listed on SportSupport

Ice Hockey Association of India is the body we list as the Indian governing/organising body for Ice Hockey. We hold no confirmed Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so nothing here states that it is currently recognised.

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in ice hockey.

  • Indian Ice Hockey Championship

Organized by the Ice Hockey Association of India (IHAI) since the first edition in 1986 (Jammu & Kashmir won the inaugural title), historically dominated by military teams (ITBP, Indian Army). UT Ladakh's men's team broke an 11-year drought to win the 2024 title (beating ITBP 4-1), explicitly described by players as breaking the stereotype that only Army/ITBP teams reach the final. Ladakh's women's team has been even more consistent, winning gold in 2022 and silver in 2021, 2023 and 2024.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in ice hockey.

  • IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia

India's men's team debuted internationally in 2009 (Abu Dhabi, finishing 8th); the women's team debuted in 2016.

  • Asian Winter Games

    India's men's team made its first-ever appearance in 2025.

  • IIHF World Championship

India is set to make its first-ever appearance in the official World Championship (Division IV) in 2027.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for ice hockey. The national championship under IHAI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in ice hockey — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Ice hockey in India has a genuinely remarkable origin story of resourcefulness: the Ladakh Winter Sports Club, founded 1995, initially lacked funds for equipment, so local players carved hockey sticks and pucks from army ammunition-boot heels and screwed handmade blades to old army boots for skates — actual ice skates came from tourists
  • In 2002 the NHL Players' Association donated 50 sets of equipment; as recently as 2008 India's national team had to borrow equipment from the more established UAE team at the Challenge Cup of Asia, and in 2015 the national team funded international travel through crowdfunding
  • Women's ice hockey has faced real social resistance in Ladakh — the Ladakh Women's Ice Hockey Foundation (founded 2015) has spoken publicly about being mocked and facing community opposition in the sport's early years, with gender bias still evident in the Kargil district
  • Ice hockey was added to India's sports-quota government job list in September 2020, opening a genuine career pathway
  • India has around 1,260 registered senior male players nationally but only 3 indoor and 42 outdoor rinks — the NDS Stadium in Leh, under construction, hosted its first major event in 2024 with full completion expected by end of 2025
  • Bollywood star Akshay Kumar produced the 2011 film 'Speedy Singhs' about the Indian ice hockey team and has personally contributed to IHAI

FAQs

Common questions about ice hockey in India.

Who governs Ice Hockey in India?▾

We list IHAI as the Indian governing/organising body for Ice Hockey, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Ice Hockey an Olympic sport?▾

Yes, Ice Hockey is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by IHAI against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.

How do I start playing Ice Hockey in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under IHAI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Ice Hockey athletes?▾

TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Ice Hockey is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Ice Hockey does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
