Kalaripayattu is listed on SportSupport in the traditional category. Its recorded origin is Ancient Kerala. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list Indian Kalaripayattu Federation as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Kalaripayattu has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through Indian Kalaripayattu Federation may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme. Kalaripayattu appears on the official Khelo India Games discipline list as "Kalaripayattu", so junior talent identified by the discipline's selectors can be considered under Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID). Kalaripayattu is contested inside a kalari (traditional training pit or arena) and is structured as a progression through four stages: meithari (body-conditioning sequences, stances and jumps), kolthari (wooden weapons such as the kettukari long staff, cheruvadi short stick and otta curved wooden club), ankathari (metal weapons including the sword and shield, spear, dagger and the flexible urumi), and verumkai (unarmed combat with locks, throws and strikes to marma vital points). Competitive events are judged on technique, form, precision, rhythm and control rather than knockout contact, with paired weapon sequences performed against an opponent to prescribed patterns. Uncontrolled strikes, breaking the prescribed sequence and unsafe weapon handling are penalised, and marma striking is trained only under a guru's supervision.
Authoritative rulebook: Indian Kalaripayattu Federation. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

It featured at the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games in 2026.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in kalaripayattu — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Kalaripayattu is widely regarded as one of the world's oldest martial arts, with roots in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu; it was banned by the British Raj due to its weapons training, and survived underground through the traditional Guru-Shishya (teacher-student) lineage system, particularly within Christian communities of southern Kerala and Tamil Nadu
- Bollywood actor Vidyut Jammwal is a well-known practitioner, giving the sport real pop-culture visibility
- Playing pathway through state kalaripayattu associations and traditional kalaris (training schools); coaching follows the traditional Guru-Shishya lineage model rather than standard sports-federation certification alone
