Rules
Kurash is an Uzbek upright jacket-wrestling style fought standing only — no groundwork, no leg grabs with the hands and no strikes. Wrestlers grip the opponent's yakhtak (jacket) and belt and try to throw them onto the back. A clean throw where the opponent lands flat on the back scores halal (the winning score, ending the bout); a partial throw onto side or shoulder scores yonbosh, and lesser controlled throws score chala. Bouts run 3–4 minutes by age/category on a circular mat; passivity and illegal holds draw tanbeh and dakki warnings, and the referee's commands are called in Uzbek.
Authoritative rulebook: Kurash Association of India. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Ways to build a career in kurash — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Many Indian kurash athletes cross over from traditional freestyle wrestling before specializing, similar to the pathway seen in wushu
- India's strongest results have consistently come from women athletes, including both 2018 Asian Games medals and both 2009 Asian Martial Arts Games golds
- As a relatively new discipline in India (introduced internationally at the Asian Indoor Games in 2007), kurash offers genuine ground-floor opportunity with less competition for national team spots than more established combat sports
- The International Kurash Association, founded 1998, has actively promoted the sport's global growth since Uzbekistan's independence, creating international competition and coaching-exchange opportunities

FAQs
Common questions about kurash in India.
Who governs Kurash in India?▾
We list Kurash Association of India as the Indian governing/organising body for Kurash, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Kurash an Olympic sport?▾
No, Kurash is not on the Olympic programme.
How do I start playing Kurash in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under Kurash Association of India. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Kurash athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Kurash is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Kurash does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
