Modern Pentathlon is listed on SportSupport in the athletics category. Its recorded origin is 1912 Sweden. It is on the Olympic programme. We list Modern Pentathlon Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Modern Pentathlon is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through Modern Pentathlon Federation of India against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.
Scholarships & Funding
Central, state and private scholarships available for modern pentathlon athletes in India.
- Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)
Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.
- Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)
Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether modern pentathlon is among the covered disciplines.
- National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to modern pentathlon.
- Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons
Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Modern pentathlon combines fencing, swimming, riding, shooting and running in a single day's competition, scored on a points system where the leader after the earlier disciplines starts the concluding event first. Fencing is a one-touch épée round-robin against every other competitor, swimming a 200m freestyle, and the finale a laser run alternating 800m running legs with five-target laser pistol shooting from a 10m distance, with athletes released in a staggered handicap start so the first across the line wins outright. Show jumping over a course on a drawn horse was part of senior competition for more than a century until 2025, when it was replaced by obstacle course racing. Shorter derivative formats are also contested: biathle (run-swim-run), triathle (swim-shoot-run), tetrathlon (four disciplines) and standalone laser run.
Authoritative rulebook: Modern Pentathlon Federation of India. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in modern pentathlon.
- Modern Pentathlon National Championship
Organized by the Modern Pentathlon Federation of India (MPFI), headquartered in Airoli, Navi Mumbai, with 12 affiliated state associations. Sources differ on the founding year — Wikipedia records 2009, while MPFI's own site and other references say 2010. It was founded by former kabaddi player Namdev Shirgaonkar and recognized by the Indian Olympic Association in 2012. The 4th National Championship (Goa, September 2013) drew 450 athletes from 14 states across fencing, swimming, equestrian, shooting and running, alongside biathle events.
- Biathle and Laser Run National Championships
MPFI held the inaugural Biathle National Championships in 2011, deliberately starting with the swim-run discipline because it needs far fewer resources than full pentathlon — an accessible grassroots entry point. Laser Run national championships also run through state associations.
- National Games and School Games
Modern pentathlon became a medal sport at the National Games of India (Goa edition), contested as a tetrathlon with men's and women's individual, relay and mixed relay categories across eight states. MPFI's secretary general described this as the federation's biggest achievement. The sport has also been part of the School Games since 2016.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in modern pentathlon.
- Asian Games
Mayank Chaphekar, from Pune, competed at Hangzhou 2023. His strongest discipline was swimming, where he clocked 2:07.77 for sixth place and 295 points; he finished the laser run in 12:38.14 for 13th. With 1,005 points he placed 13th in Semi-Final Group B and did not reach the medal round, where only the top nine from each group advanced.
- Asian Modern Pentathlon Championships
India's results have been modest — Angad Sahlot finished 30th of 33 competitors at the 2013 championship in Astana, Kazakhstan.
- Governance role
MPFI general secretary Namdev Shirgaonkar was elected general secretary of the Asian Modern Pentathlon Confederation in October 2016, giving India a continental administrative role. MPFI also signed an MoU with the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation at Karnal, Haryana in September 2016, covering technical support and athlete/coach exchange with one of the sport's strongest nations.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in modern pentathlon — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Modern pentathlon is a genuinely demanding entry point in India because it requires access to five separate disciplines — fencing salles, swimming pools, horses, shooting ranges and running tracks — which is why MPFI has prioritized biathle and laser run as lower-cost pathways into the sport
- The sport's format changed substantially in 2025, when equestrian show jumping was replaced by obstacle course racing in senior competition after more than a century — a change that removes the single most expensive access barrier and may open the sport considerably in India
- MPFI's own materials list Anish Bhanwala's 2018 Commonwealth Games gold among its athletes' achievements; that medal was won in 25m rapid fire pistol shooting rather than in modern pentathlon competition, so it is a shooting result rather than a pentathlon one
- MPFI holds IOA recognition and UIPM/AMPC membership and has publicly sought Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition; playing pathway runs through state associations, National Games and School Games entry
- Coach and official certification runs through MPFI under UIPM standards

Common questions about modern pentathlon in India.
Who governs Modern Pentathlon in India?▾
We list Modern Pentathlon Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for Modern Pentathlon, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Modern Pentathlon an Olympic sport?▾
Yes, Modern Pentathlon is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by Modern Pentathlon Federation of India against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.
How do I start playing Modern Pentathlon in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under Modern Pentathlon Federation of India. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Modern Pentathlon athletes?▾
TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Modern Pentathlon is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Modern Pentathlon does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
