Motocross is listed on SportSupport in the motor category. Its recorded origin is 20th century Europe. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Motocross has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through FMSCI may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for motocross athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Stipend, boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to motocross.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given motocross event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.

  • State sports quota and government employment

Many states reserve government and public-sector posts for national-level medallists. Which motocross events and which certifying bodies a state accepts varies by state, so check your state's current notification.

Rules

Motocross is off-road motorcycle racing on natural-terrain circuits of dirt, mud, sand and gravel, with jumps, berms and steep climbs. Riders line up on a gate for a mass start and race a set number of laps or a fixed time plus two laps, with results decided on finishing position across two motos. Supercross, the indoor/stadium variant, is a sprint format on man-made tracks with tight turns, rhythm sections and whoops — a 2018 national round in Coimbatore ran on a 700-metre track with ten jumps. In India both are sanctioned by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India, with classes split by engine capacity and rider grade — SX1 and SX2 at the top, then private expert, local and novice categories, plus dedicated junior classes.

Authoritative rulebook: FMSCI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across motor sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced motocross squad list.

  • Driver / rider
Competes for the fastest time or best finishing position.
  • Co-driver / navigator (rally)
Reads the pace notes and manages the stage plan.
  • Team & pit crew
Race engineer, mechanic, strategist and pit-stop crew.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in motocross at a federation-recognised event.

  • Off-road motorcycle with long-travel suspension and knobbly tyres, in the class engine capacity (Group D up to 130cc at entry level, through to premier-class machines)
  • Full-face motocross helmet with goggles and roost deflector or chest protector
  • Knee braces, elbow guards, neck brace and motocross boots
  • Reinforced jersey, pants and gloves
  • Bike preparation kit — spare tyres, sprockets, air filters and suspension tools; many riders' families run their own workshops
  • A valid FMSCI competition or restricted licence, plus a parental NOC for riders under 18

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in motocross.

  • MRF MoGrip FMSCI National Supercross Championship

India's premier off-road two-wheeler championship, sanctioned by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India and promoted by Godspeed Racing under veteran organiser Shyam Kothari. Rounds move across Pune, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Nashik, Indore, Goa, Raipur, Vadodara and Chikkamagaluru, with the 2026 finale staged in Visakhapatnam. Classes are split by engine capacity and rider grade, from SX1 and SX2 down through private expert, local and novice categories, plus dedicated junior classes.

  • Indian Supercross Racing League (ISRL)

A franchise-based league launched in January 2024 by Team SXI with FMSCI accreditation, billed as the world's first of its kind in supercross. Its opening round at Pune's Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex drew close to 8,000 spectators. Six brand-based teams compete — BB Racing, BigRock Motorsports, Mohite's Racing, Gujarat Trailblazers, Reise Motorsports and SG Speed Racers — with CEAT as title sponsor. BigRock Motorsports won the inaugural title and retained it in Season 2, which concluded at Kozhikode in December 2025. The league was set up with backing from two-time national supercross champion Veer Patel and former motocross racer Eeshan Lokhande.

  • Motocross and dirt track

FMSCI also sanctions separate motocross and dirt track national championships alongside supercross. The distinction matters: motocross runs long races on natural terrain, while supercross is a sprint format on man-made stadium tracks with tight turns, rhythm sections and whoops — a 2018 national round in Coimbatore ran on a 700-metre track with ten jumps.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in motocross.

  • International riders in India

The ISRL has drawn established international competitors — Frenchman Jordi Tixier, a former World Motocross Champion, won three races in the league's opening round at Pune in 2024, racing against Indian riders on home soil.

  • Indian riders abroad

Indian juniors have competed overseas, including at the Sri Lankan junior motocross championship, and top riders have trained abroad — Shlok Ghorpade of KTM Factory Racing India prepared in California before a premier-class double win at a national round, and Hero's factory motocross programme trains riders under Spanish chief trainer Jordi Viladoms.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for motocross. The national championship under FMSCI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in motocross — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Motocross has one of the earliest entry points in Indian motorsport: FMSCI sets the minimum age for a dirt track licence at 13 for Group D up to 130cc and moped classes and 15 for other classes, and supercross does not require a civil driving licence — riders under 18 compete on a parental NOC endorsed by a recognised team or FMSCI member club
  • Licensing progresses in tiers — restricted licence holders may only ride Group D unmodified machines, while a full competition licence is mandatory for Groups A, B and C, and riders over 50 must submit a stress-test ECG
  • Factory teams are the main professional route. TVS Racing has been the most consistent presence, with KTM Factory Racing India, Hero and privateer outfits like Angata Racing and 13 Racing also fielding riders
  • The sport runs on family legacies to an unusual degree — Rugved Barguje's father Gnyaneshwar Barguje was a national motocross champion and Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Award winner, with an uncle and two cousins also racing; Ikshan Shanbhag is a third-generation motorsport competitor; and Sarthak Chavan's uncle Snehal is a three-time dirt track national champion
  • Kerala's Harith Noah has been among the most successful riders of the modern era, leading the national supercross championship for TVS Racing
  • Beyond riding, there is real work in bike preparation and tuning — several riders' families run workshops modifying machines for the grid — alongside event promotion, which in India is dominated by a handful of specialist organisers

FAQs

Common questions about motocross in India.

Who governs Motocross in India?▾

We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for Motocross, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Motocross an Olympic sport?▾

No, Motocross is not on the Olympic programme.

How do I start playing Motocross in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under FMSCI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Motocross athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Motocross is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Motocross does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
