MotoGP is listed on SportSupport in the motor category. Its recorded origin is 1949. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
MotoGP has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through FMSCI may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.
Scholarships & Funding
Central, state and private scholarships available for motogp athletes in India.
- Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)
Stipend, boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.
- National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to motogp.
- Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons
Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given motogp event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.
- State sports quota and government employment
Many states reserve government and public-sector posts for national-level medallists. Which motogp events and which certifying bodies a state accepts varies by state, so check your state's current notification.

MotoGP is the premier class of the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix, contested on closed circuits over a race distance of roughly 110-120km. A grand prix weekend runs practice and two qualifying sessions that set the grid, a Saturday sprint at half distance for reduced points, and the full Sunday race. Riders start from a standing grid and race a set number of laps, with points to the top 15 finishers. The championship has three classes on the same bill — MotoGP on 1000cc four-stroke prototypes, Moto2 on 765cc triples and Moto3 on 250cc singles — with technical rules capping engine allocation, fuel, aerodynamic updates and tyre supply, and penalties including long-lap penalties, ride-throughs and grid drops for track-limit and riding-conduct offences.
Authoritative rulebook: FMSCI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Governing/organising body
Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India is the body we list as the Indian governing/organising body for MotoGP. Its recognition status as we hold it: Provisional recognition as the National Sports Federation for motor sports (as at 2026). Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in motogp.
- Buddh International Circuit
India's only MotoGP-grade venue, at Jaypee Sports City in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Designed by Hermann Tilke, opened in October 2011 at a cost of around ₹2,000 crore with a capacity of 110,000. The motorcycle configuration runs 5.010km over 13 turns, with a straight of just over a kilometre where riders touched around 370km/h, and banked corners at turns 8 and 9. Marco Bezzecchi holds the motorcycle lap record at 1:45.028 on a Ducati Desmosedici GP22.
- Domestic feeder series
There is no Indian MotoGP championship. Riders progress through FMSCI-sanctioned national motorcycle racing and the Asia Road Racing Championship, a round of which the Buddh circuit hosted in 2016, rather than through any home-grand-prix pathway.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in motogp.
- IndianOil Grand Prix of India 2023
India's only MotoGP round to date, held on 22-24 September 2023 as round 13 of the season, with 82 riders across 41 teams competing in MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3. Marco Bezzecchi took pole and the win ahead of Jorge Martín and Fabio Quartararo; Pedro Acosta won the Moto2 race and Jaume Masià the Moto3. It was MotoGP's first new event in over a decade without any prior testing, and Michelin brought a wider than usual tyre allocation as a result.
- Heat and race shortening
All races were cut short after riders and tyre suppliers requested adjustments in extreme heat and humidity. The Sunday MotoGP race dropped from 24 laps to 21, and the sprint plus both Moto2 and Moto3 races lost a lap each. Reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia said he had never felt heat like it, and race winner-elect Jorge Martín finished the sprint dealing with unzipping leathers and heatstroke.
- Cancellation and return
The 2024 Indian Grand Prix was called off, with the FIM, IRTA and Dorna citing operational considerations and announcing a move to March 2025 on the advice of the Uttar Pradesh government for better weather. That date also passed without a race, and MotoGP has since confirmed the Indian Grand Prix's return for 2026.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in motogp — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- India's involvement in MotoGP has been as a host nation rather than through competitors — no documented Indian rider participation in the world championship was found in available sources, and the Indian pathway to international motorcycle racing runs through the Asia Road Racing Championship and national circuit racing instead
- Dorna's interest is commercial and demographic: India has more than 200 million motorcycles on its roads, and CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta framed the country as a key market for the motorcycle industry and by extension for the championship
- The 2023 event demonstrated the scale of work a grand prix creates locally — circuit modification including extended gravel traps for two-wheel safety, marshalling, medical provision, ticketing and hospitality operations, all of which are genuine event-industry careers
- The repeated postponements are a real caution: a single grand prix does not by itself build a domestic racing ecosystem, and India's motorcycle racing talent pipeline still depends on FMSCI national championships and manufacturer-backed teams rather than on the world championship visiting

FAQs
Common questions about motogp in India.
Who governs MotoGP in India?▾
We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for MotoGP, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is MotoGP an Olympic sport?▾
No, MotoGP is not on the Olympic programme.
How do I start playing MotoGP in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under FMSCI. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support MotoGP athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as MotoGP is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. MotoGP does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
