Mountain Biking is listed on SportSupport in the cycling category. Its recorded origin is 1970s USA. It is on the Olympic programme. We list CFI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Mountain Biking is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through CFI against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for mountain biking athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)

Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether mountain biking is among the covered disciplines.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to mountain biking.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Rules

Mountain biking is raced under UCI rules across several disciplines. Cross-country Olympic (XCO) is a mass-start race over multiple laps of a technical off-road circuit, run to a target time with lapped riders pulled by the 80% rule; cross-country marathon (XCM) is a single long-distance course. Downhill (DHI) is an individual time trial down a steep technical descent, with seeding runs deciding start order and the fastest single run winning. Enduro is timed on descending special stages with untimed transfers, and four-cross puts four riders head to head on a short course. Riders must complete the marked course without shortcutting, may accept no outside mechanical assistance except in designated tech zones, and must carry out their own repairs; helmets are mandatory at all times (full-face for downhill and four-cross), and time penalties or disqualification follow for course cutting, unsportsmanlike blocking or missing equipment checks. Stage races such as MTB Himalaya aggregate daily stage times into a general classification.

Authoritative rulebook: CFI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across cycling sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced mountain biking squad list.

  • Road — sprinter / climber / GC
Rider roles across stage races and one-day classics.
  • Track — sprint & endurance
Sprint, keirin, team sprint on one side; pursuit, points race, madison on the other.

  • Hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike matched to discipline (light XC hardtail; long-travel downhill rig)
  • Helmet — cross-country half-shell or full-face for downhill/four-cross — plus goggles or glasses
  • Body protection: gloves, knee and elbow pads, back/chest protector for gravity disciplines
  • Clipless or flat pedals with matching shoes; spare tubes, tubeless sealant, mini pump, chain tool and multi-tool
  • Hydration pack or bottles, and stage-race kit: spare tyres, drivetrain spares and bike repair stand

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in mountain biking.

  • National Mountain Bike Cycling Championship

Organized under the aegis of the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) across Senior, Junior and Sub-Junior categories — the 22nd edition was held at Roing, Arunachal Pradesh in February 2026. An Under-23 category was added in 2021. CFI also runs national coaching camps for elite and junior riders selected on championship performance.

  • MTB Himalaya

India's premier mountain bike stage race, organized since 2005 by HASTPA (Himalayan Adventure Sports and Tourism Promotion Association) in Himachal Pradesh and sponsored by Hero Cycles. Now past its 15th edition, it covers roughly 650km with about 16,500m of climbing at an average altitude of 2,200m over 8 days, and is regarded as one of the toughest MTB stage races in the world. It draws world champions including Cory Wallace and Andreas Seewald alongside riders from the Indian Army, Air Force and ITBP.

  • Regional and downhill events

A dense grassroots calendar includes MTB Kerala (Wayanad), MTB Shimla, MTB Meghalaya, the Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival (Manali), the Mokokchung Mountain Bike Festival and Kohima Downhill (Nagaland), and the Mechukha Downhill Championship (Arunachal Pradesh). Sikkim's tourism department launched its own race in 2024 offering what organizers described as the largest prize money in Southeast Asia.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in mountain biking.

  • Asian MTB Championships

Shiven Sharma placed 12th — the best result an Indian rider has recorded at this event.

  • UCI-sanctioned racing

Sharma took India's first-ever UCI podium at MTB Kerala in 2019.

  • South Asian Games

Sharma finished 4th in Nepal in 2019, behind three Nepalese riders.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in mountain biking — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Shiven Sharma's path is emblematic: born and raised in Lahaul-Spiti, he completed a mechanical engineering degree at NIT Kurukshetra in 2018 while racing, became a two-time reigning Indian XCO champion, and later signed with Trek India
  • The Hero Action Team, backed by Hero Cycles and mentored by HASTPA, was India's first professionally managed mountain biking team
  • Northeast India has become a genuine downhill hub, with riders from Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh dominating the discipline
  • Riders themselves are candid about the constraints — one Northeast racer noted that while India's MTB community is strong, competitive growth is slow relative to international peers, and called for more events plus greater support from state associations and the national federation
  • Playing pathway through CFI state associations and the national championship; a large amateur club scene (Aravalli Trailhunters in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai MTB Offroaders, Riders of the Storm in Chandigarh, MTB Jaipur) provides an accessible entry point
  • Adventure tourism and guided MTB touring are established allied careers, particularly in Kerala, Ladakh, Himachal and Uttarakhand

FAQs

Common questions about mountain biking in India.

Who governs Mountain Biking in India?▾

We list CFI as the Indian governing/organising body for Mountain Biking, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Mountain Biking an Olympic sport?▾

Yes, Mountain Biking is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by CFI against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.

How do I start playing Mountain Biking in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under CFI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Mountain Biking athletes?▾

TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Mountain Biking is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Mountain Biking does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
