Rules

Swimmers race without prostheses or assistive devices, using only their body. Classes run S1 to S10 for physical impairment, with the lowest numbers indicating the greatest activity limitation, S11 to S13 for visual impairment and S14 for intellectual impairment. The prefix denotes the stroke group — S for freestyle, backstroke and butterfly, SB for breaststroke and SM for individual medley. Swimmers with visual impairment are warned of the approaching wall by a tapper using a padded pole. Starts may be taken from the blocks, in the water, or seated depending on class.

Paralympic Games — India's first gold
Murlikant Petkar won India's first-ever Paralympic gold medal in this sport at Heidelberg 1972, taking the men's 50m freestyle 3 in a world record 37.33 seconds. He was the first Indian to win an individual gold at either the Olympics or the Paralympics. At the same Games he also reached the finals of the javelin, precision javelin and wheelchair slalom, and he had competed in para table tennis at Tel Aviv 1968.
World Para Swimming Championships
India sends squads to the World Championships and Asian Para Games, and fielded para swimmers at Paris 2024, though the country has not added a Paralympic swimming medal since 1972.

Petkar's story is the foundation of Indian para sport: a soldier in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, he was left paraplegic by gunshot wounds during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war and still carries a bullet in his spine. He took up swimming as rehabilitation and won India's first Paralympic gold seven years later
Recognition took decades — he received the Padma Shri only in 2018, and the Arjuna Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2024, fifty-two years after the gold, a gap that reflects how little para sport was acknowledged in India at the time
His life reached a wide audience through the 2024 film Chandu Champion, directed by Kabir Khan
Access to accessible pools remains the sport's central constraint in India — Petkar himself trained in public pools only after able-bodied swimmers had finished, and described being astonished by the dedicated facilities he saw at Stoke Mandeville in 1968
