Rally Racing is listed on SportSupport in the motor category. Its recorded origin is Early 20th century. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Rally Racing has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through FMSCI may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for rally racing athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Stipend, boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to rally racing.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria at Asian, Commonwealth or World Championship level — Government of India. Whether a given rally racing event counts depends on the scheme's notified list.

  • State sports quota and government employment

Many states reserve government and public-sector posts for national-level medallists. Which rally racing events and which certifying bodies a state accepts varies by state, so check your state's current notification.

Rules

Rallying is contested against the clock on closed special stages of gravel, dirt, tarmac or forest track rather than wheel-to-wheel on a circuit. Cars start at timed intervals and the winner is the crew with the lowest cumulative stage time across the event, with penalties added for arriving early or late at time controls. Each crew is two people: a driver and a co-driver who reads pace notes prepared during the recce. Indian events are typically three-day formats with service parks between stage loops, run to FIA-derived regulations administered by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India, and split into classes — INRC overall, INRC2, INRC3 and a dedicated Women INRC category.

Authoritative rulebook: FMSCI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across motor sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced rally racing squad list.

  • Driver / rider
Competes for the fastest time or best finishing position.
  • Co-driver / navigator (rally)
Reads the pace notes and manages the stage plan.
  • Team & pit crew
Race engineer, mechanic, strategist and pit-stop crew.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in rally racing at a federation-recognised event.

  • Homologated rally car with roll cage, competition seats, harnesses and sump/underbody protection for gravel stages
  • Gravel and tarmac tyres, plus spare wheels carried in the car for stage punctures
  • FIA-standard helmets with intercom, FHR/HANS device and flame-resistant race suits, gloves, boots and underwear for both crew members
  • Pace-note books, stopwatches and tripmeter for the co-driver
  • Onboard fire extinguisher system, tow rope and recovery equipment
  • A service crew with spares — entry fees alone run to over ₹1 lakh per car per event for manufacturer teams, before car, tyres and travel

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in rally racing.

  • Indian National Rally Championship (INRC)

India's premier rallying series, which received national championship status in 1988 under the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), the FIA-recognised governing body for Indian motorsport. It runs typically five rounds a year across Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Coorg and Bengaluru, each a three-day event of timed special stages on gravel, dirt and forest tracks, with classes including INRC overall, INRC2, INRC3 and a dedicated Women INRC category. Karna Kadur and co-driver Musa Sherif took the 2024 title at Tumakuru driving a Volkswagen Polo R2 for Team Arka Motorsports.

  • Pre-1988 endurance era

Before INRC, Indian rallying ran on the TSD (time, speed, distance) format — endurance events crossing several states over multiple days, sometimes exceeding 1,000 miles. The South India Rally began in 1975 covering around 1,600km from Chennai, the K1000 started in Bengaluru the same year, and the Popular Rally ran from Cochin with regroups at Coimbatore or Ooty. Others included the Charminar Challenge Rally in Hyderabad, the Coffee 500 and the Scissors Action Rally in Coimbatore, often run on public highways.

  • Supporting championships

FMSCI sanctions nearly a dozen national championships across motorsport disciplines, including a Rally Sprint championship whose winner is automatically B-seeded into the following year's INRC — a formal step up the ladder for emerging drivers.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in rally racing.

  • Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC)

Gaurav Gill is India's most decorated rally driver with three APRC titles alongside seven INRC crowns. Rounds of the INRC have doubled as APRC Asia Cup events, giving Indian drivers continental competition on home stages — the 2024 season opener in Chennai was one such round.

  • Arjuna Award recognition

Gaurav Gill became the first Indian motorsport athlete to receive the Arjuna Award, a landmark for a discipline that had long sat outside India's mainstream sports-honours system.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for rally racing. The national championship under FMSCI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in rally racing — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Rallying is a two-person sport and the co-driver's seat is a genuine career in itself — Nikhil Pai, a sound engineer by profession from Secunderabad, has competed in the INRC since 1992 and won national co-driver titles in 2016 and 2022
  • Crossover from two wheels is common: Gaurav Gill started on motorcycles, winning the Motocross Nationals in 1999 and the Racing Nationals in 2004 before moving to cars
  • Many Indian rally drivers compete alongside other professions — Dr Bikku Babu, nicknamed 'Dr Speed', qualified as a doctor before returning to top-level rallying and winning the National Autocross championship in 2018
  • Cost is the sport's defining barrier: manufacturer team entry fees run to over ₹1 lakh per car per event on top of the car, service crew, tyres and travel, so most drivers depend on tyre-company and manufacturer backing — MRF, JK Tyre, Yokohama and Birla have all fielded or supported teams
  • Arjun Balu's career shows the depth of the domestic ladder: from Coimbatore, he started in 1992, joined MRF as a lead driver in 1995, spent 17 years in the INRC and retired from rallying in 2011 before continuing in the Indian Touring Car championship
  • The championship's promoters have run explicit development initiatives including a Women's Drive programme aimed at opening the sport to more women competitors and a Rising Talents category for young drivers

FAQs

Common questions about rally racing in India.

Who governs Rally Racing in India?▾

We list FMSCI as the Indian governing/organising body for Rally Racing, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Rally Racing an Olympic sport?▾

No, Rally Racing is not on the Olympic programme.

How do I start playing Rally Racing in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under FMSCI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Rally Racing athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Rally Racing is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Rally Racing does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
