Road Cycling is listed on SportSupport in the cycling category. Its recorded origin is 19th century. It is on the Olympic programme. We list CFI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Road Cycling is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through CFI against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for road cycling athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)

Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether road cycling is among the covered disciplines.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to road cycling.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Rules

Road cycling is contested on open roads in two main formats. Mass-start road races send the whole field off together over a set distance, and the first rider across the line wins; drafting, teamwork and tactical positioning are central, and riders may be eliminated if they fall outside a time cut. Individual time trials start riders at fixed intervals to race alone against the clock, with drafting and pacing assistance prohibited. Commissaires enforce UCI rules on bike dimensions, position, feeding zones, vehicle following order and sprint conduct; irregular sprinting, holding onto vehicles or crossing the yellow line can bring relegation or disqualification. National titles are awarded separately for the road race and the time trial in senior and junior men's and women's categories.

Authoritative rulebook: CFI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across cycling sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced road cycling squad list.

  • Road — sprinter / climber / GC
Rider roles across stage races and one-day classics.
  • Track — sprint & endurance
Sprint, keirin, team sprint on one side; pursuit, points race, madison on the other.
  • MTB & BMX
Cross-country, downhill and BMX racing / freestyle.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in road cycling at a federation-recognised event.

  • UCI-legal road racing bicycle (separate time-trial bike with aero bars for TT events)
  • Certified hard-shell helmet; aero helmet for time trials
  • Cycling shoes with cleats, jersey and bib shorts, mitts and eyewear
  • Spare wheels, tyres and team support/neutral service vehicle at sanctioned races
  • Power meter, cyclo-computer and race radio where permitted

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in road cycling.

  • National Road Cycling Championship

Organized annually by the Cycling Federation of India (CFI, affiliated to the Indian Olympic Association, Asian Cycling Confederation and UCI) across senior and junior men's and women's categories, covering individual time trial and mass-start road race events. The 29th edition was held at Puri, Odisha in December 2024.

  • Khelo India Women's Cycling League (KIWCL)

A dedicated women's development circuit with road and track legs staged across multiple states — recent seasons have included road events in Telangana, Chennai, Amritsar, Rohtak, Patna, Baramati and Vadodara, creating far more competitive opportunities for women cyclists than previously existed.

  • Prize money road races and cyclothons

CFI also sanctions commercial mass-participation and prize-money road races, including the HCL Cyclothon in Chennai.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in road cycling.

  • UCI Road World Championships

Naveen John and Arvind Panwar became the first Indians to compete at the event, riding the time trial in 2016 and finishing 55th.

  • Asian Road Cycling Championships

India competes annually — Jasmeek Kaur of Punjab was among those selected for the 2025 edition in Phitsanulok, Thailand. CFI publishes full results through to the 44th edition.

  • South Asian Games

Arvind Panwar won multiple honours across the 2018 and 2019 editions.

  • Asian Games — a structural note

Although both road and track cycling featured at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, India's 10-member squad competed only in track events, reflecting where the country's competitive depth currently sits.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for road cycling. The national championship under CFI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in road cycling — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Naveen John became the first Indian to sign for an international professional cycling team when the Australian UCI Continental outfit State of Matter MAAP Racing recruited him in 2016 — the clearest professional pathway an Indian road cyclist has achieved
  • Arvind Panwar, from Meerut, only started cycling after turning 18 and went on to represent India at the UCI Road World Championships, showing the sport's relatively late entry window compared with track disciplines
  • Cycling in India traces to the mid-1930s through Janki Das, who competed as India's lone cyclist at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney; the National Cyclists Federation of India was formed in 1946 by Das and Sohrab H. Bhoot, who also founded the Asian Cycling Federation
  • Patiala and Bikaner became the sport's early nurseries after international-standard tracks were built there in 1975 and 1980, and remain central to national camps and championships
  • Playing pathway runs through CFI state associations, junior and senior national road championships and Khelo India leagues; road cycling also supports allied careers in coaching, event management and the growing cyclothon and endurance-event industry

FAQs

Common questions about road cycling in India.

Who governs Road Cycling in India?▾

We list CFI as the Indian governing/organising body for Road Cycling, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Road Cycling an Olympic sport?▾

Yes, Road Cycling is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by CFI against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.

How do I start playing Road Cycling in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under CFI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Road Cycling athletes?▾

TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Road Cycling is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Road Cycling does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
