Show Jumping is listed on SportSupport in the equestrian category. Its recorded origin is 19th century. It is on the Olympic programme. We list EFI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Show Jumping is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through EFI against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for show jumping athletes in India.

  • Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)

Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.

  • Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)

Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether show jumping is among the covered disciplines.

  • National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to show jumping.

  • Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons

Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Rules

Show jumping is scored on faults and time: horse and rider negotiate a numbered course of knockable obstacles — verticals, oxers, walls and combinations — within an optimum time. Each knockdown or foot in the water costs 4 penalties, a first refusal 4 penalties, and a second refusal or a fall brings elimination; time faults accrue at 1 penalty per second over the time allowed. Riders walk the course beforehand but do not jump it. Equality on zero faults goes to a timed jump-off over a shortened track, fastest clear round winning. Fence heights rise by class, from around 0.80-1.00m in preliminary classes to 130-150cm at championship level, and FEI horse-welfare and veterinary inspection rules apply throughout.

Authoritative rulebook: EFI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Positions

Typical roles across equestrian sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced show jumping squad list.

  • Dressage rider
Judged on movement quality across a set test.
  • Show-jumping rider
Timed round with faults for rails, refusals and time.
  • Eventing rider
Combined dressage, cross-country and show jumping.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in show jumping at a federation-recognised event.

  • Purpose-bred jumping horse (typically an imported European warmblood at elite level)
  • Jumping saddle with forward-cut flap, bridle with permitted bit and martingale
  • Certified helmet, show jacket, white breeches, tall boots
  • Horse leg protection (tendon and fetlock boots), studs for grip
  • Spurs and whip within FEI length limits
  • Arena with course of adjustable obstacles, timing equipment and jump-off track

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in show jumping.

  • National Equestrian Championship (Show Jumping)

India's premier show jumping event, run by the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI). Recent editions have been held at the Modi Equestrian Academy in Modi Puram, Meerut, drawing over 250 entries across five categories — Preliminary Tour, Novice Tour, Young Horse Championship, Medium Tour and Championship Tour, with the Championship Tour winner crowned National Champion. Fence heights scale from 0.80-1.00m in the Preliminary Tour up to 130-150cm in the Championship Tour.

  • Recent national champions

Tejas Dhingra of Beeya's Riding Facility retained the national title at the 2024-25 championship with 16 points in the Championship Tour, ahead of joint runners-up Amar Sarin (Tarc Equestrian Centre) and Ashray Butta (EGC Stables). Yashaan Zubin Khambatta won both the Novice and Medium Tours, and Gaurav Lonkar took the Young Horse Championship on Aziza. Kaevaan and Zahan Setalvad of Mumbai's Amateur Riders Club have each won the national title twice — Kaevaan in 2016 and 2021, Zahan in 2018 and 2019 — taking gold and silver in a 150cm Grand Prix at the championship in Delhi in which only seven horse-rider combinations qualified for the final.

  • Equestrian Premier League and other circuits

The Equestrian Premier League, run by Embassy International Riding School in Bangalore since 2009, holds jumping and dressage competitions aimed at raising domestic standards. The All India Police Equestrian Championship and Mounted Police Duty Meet is a separate major fixture, drawing 18 teams from state and central paramilitary forces with around 290 horses and 460 riders across show jumping, dressage, tent pegging and cross country.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in show jumping.

  • Olympic Games

Show jumping has been an Olympic sport since Stockholm 1912. India's Olympic equestrian representation has historically come through eventing and, more recently, dressage rather than show jumping.

  • Asian Games

Show jumping riders including Sehaj Singh Virk, Tejas Dhingra, Kirat Singh Nagra, Ashray Butta and Yashaan Zubin Khambatta have represented India. The Setalvad brothers rode for India at Jakarta 2018. India's overall Asian Games equestrian record across all disciplines stands at 14 medals (4 gold, 3 silver, 7 bronze) as of 2023.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for show jumping. The national championship under EFI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in show jumping — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • EFI's founding in 1967 was driven directly by show jumping: as Indian riders grew more successful domestically, the FEI would not accept them at foreign shows unless entered by a national federation, and India had none — so one was created, after which shows across the country affiliated and ran jumping classes under common rules
  • The sport's Indian history runs through the cavalry — early competitors were British cavalry officers and their families, then Indian cavalrymen, with intense inter-regimental rivalry. Risaldar Dhup Singh won the 1954 National Show Jumping Championship on Raja and received the trophy from President Rajendra Prasad; in 1961 Naik Hari Ram, riding Chetak and Patak, won so comprehensively at the Delhi Horse Show and took both the National Jumping and National Tent Pegging titles that the rules were subsequently changed to stop riders fielding the same horse in too many events
  • Cost remains the central barrier — top Indian riders compete on imported German, Dutch and French warmbloods bred specifically for the discipline, and horse purchase, stabling and transport dominate the expense
  • EFI's stated development priorities include raising the standard of national coaches, course designers, judges and event veterinarians, and building facilities at New Delhi, Meerut, Bangalore and Jaipur — all of which are genuine allied career paths alongside riding
  • Junior riders progress through the national championship age-group classes and the Medium Tour

FAQs

Common questions about show jumping in India.

Who governs Show Jumping in India?▾

We list EFI as the Indian governing/organising body for Show Jumping, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Show Jumping an Olympic sport?▾

Yes, Show Jumping is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by EFI against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.

How do I start playing Show Jumping in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under EFI. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Show Jumping athletes?▾

TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Show Jumping is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Show Jumping does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
