Reviewed profileAchievements, tournaments, coaches and FAQs on this page are compiled by hand from federation, government and press reporting, drawing on Business Standard — 'India got its first strongman competition' (2015), Explocity Bangalore — Manoj Chopra profile, 'The journey of Asia's Strongest Man', BookOfAchievers — Manoj Chopra World's Strongest Man 2004, Indian Strongman Federation (indianstrongmanfederation.com), Hindustan Metro — Strongman India League 2025, Dehradun, World Strongmen Federation of India (worldstrongmenfederationofindia.com), Jerai Strongman (jeraistrongman.com), Strongman Archives (strongmanarchives.com), Wikipedia — Manjit Singh (strongman). Strongman is listed on SportSupport in the strength category. Its recorded origin is Modern. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list Indian Strongman Federation as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.

Strongman does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, and we hold no verified central pathway or current-year Ministry recognition record for it, so we make no Khelo India, TOPS, National Sports Development Fund or pension claim. Whatever competition exists is run by clubs, akharas, private promoters or state-level bodies. (Checked against Sports Authority of India / Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports — Discipline wise Participation in all editions of Khelo India Games (19th Edition).)

Scholarships & Funding

Central, state and private scholarships available for strongman athletes in India.

  • No central scholarship pathway

We hold no verified central pathway for strongman and no current-year Ministry recognition record for a national body, so we make no Khelo India, TOPS or National Sports Development Fund claim for it.

Rules

Strongman is a multi-event strength contest rather than a single lift. A show is built from a set of events chosen by the promoter — deadlift variations (axle, car, frame), overhead press with log or axle, atlas stones loaded onto ascending platforms, yoke carry, farmer's walk, truck or vehicle pull, tyre flip and loading medleys. Events are scored either for maximum weight, for repetitions or distance inside a time limit, or for fastest time, and each athlete's placing in every event converts to points; the highest points total across all events wins. Rules are set per event — a press must be locked out and held to a down command, stones must be fully loaded above the platform lip, and a dropped or unfinished implement scores zero. Because there is no single global rulebook binding every promoter, event lists and standards vary between competitions.

Authoritative rulebook: Indian Strongman Federation.

Positions

Typical roles across strength sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced strongman squad list.

  • Snatch
Single-movement lift from floor to overhead — Olympic weightlifting event.
  • Clean & jerk
Two-stage lift to the shoulders then overhead — Olympic weightlifting event.
  • Squat / bench / deadlift
The three powerlifting disciplines contested by weight class.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in strongman at a federation-recognised event.

  • Atlas stones in ascending weights and loading platforms
  • Log and axle bars for overhead pressing, plus deadlift frame or car-deadlift apparatus
  • Yoke, farmer's walk handles, sandbags and loading medley implements
  • Tyres for flipping and a vehicle plus harness and rope for truck pulls
  • Lifting belt, knee sleeves, wrist wraps, tacky and stone sleeves for stone events
  • Deadlift suit or singlet where the promoter's rules allow supportive gear

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in strongman.

  • Governance

Strongman in India has no single government-recognised national federation. Several bodies operate in parallel — the Indian Strongman Federation (ISF), headed by Kartik Yadav; a separately named World Strongmen Federation of India, affiliated to the World Strongmen Federation which claims members across around 30 countries; and commercial promoters such as the Jerai Strongman competition, which runs an India's Strongest Man title.

  • Strongman India League

Launched by ISF in 2025 at the Parade Ground in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and billed as the first league-format strongman competition anywhere. Six regional teams competed across truck-pulling, atlas stone lifting, deadlifts and tyre flips, with the winners taking a 'Strongest State of India' title.

  • SPAC Fitness Festival and open competitions

ISF also runs the SPAC Fitness Festival, a three-day event combining strongman, powerlifting, arm wrestling and CrossFit. India's first organised strongman competition was held in 2015 and drew crossover athletes — among them Amit Singh, a national-level shot putter from Rohtak who spectators nicknamed 'The Hulk', competing alongside his wife Purnima Singh in the women's event.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in strongman.

  • World's Strongest Man

Manoj Chopra, from Raipur and later based in Bengaluru, became the first Indian to compete, at the December 2004 edition in Canada, where he finished 14th. He had won India's Strongest Man and then Asia's Strongest Man to earn the invitation. Strongman Archives records his competitive window as 2004 alone.

  • Diaspora note

Manjit Singh, born in India and resident in Leicestershire since 1977, holds a large number of Guinness World Records for pulling feats — including hauling a double-decker bus with his teeth, one hand and, separately, his ponytail. These are Guinness record attempts made from the UK rather than results in Indian or international strongman competition.

Leagues

No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for strongman. The national championship under Indian Strongman Federation remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in strongman — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Chopra's account is the clearest picture of what the sport has offered Indian athletes: he took up strength training in 1996 after watching the World's Strongest Man on television and noticing India was unrepresented, and by 2004 had earned an invitation but no funding. With no sponsors and no support from the sports ministry, he wrote to the World Strongman Federation in Austria withdrawing — and the federation paid for his travel so he could compete. He arrived with a pair of shorts and a shirt with the Indian flag printed on it, against rivals with tailored kit, sports funding and dedicated medical support
  • Because there is no recognised federation, there is no sports-quota employment route, no Khelo India pathway and no national awards eligibility for strongman as such — athletes typically come from shot put, powerlifting or wrestling backgrounds where those structures do exist
  • Post-competition careers run through exhibitions, motivational speaking and coaching — Chopra has worked with Power Team India doing power-feat exhibitions and speaking engagements
  • The Strongman India League's team format and state-level branding is the sport's clearest attempt at building a repeatable domestic circuit, and ISF has acknowledged support from central and Uttarakhand state ministers, though this is public encouragement rather than formal recognition
  • Events are equipment-heavy — atlas stones, yokes, logs, axles, farmer's walk handles and vehicles for pulling — so access depends on gyms and promoters willing to invest in specialist kit

FAQs

Common questions about strongman in India.

Who governs Strongman in India?▾

We list Indian Strongman Federation as the Indian governing/organising body for Strongman, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Strongman an Olympic sport?▾

No, Strongman is not on the Olympic programme.

What government schemes support Strongman athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Strongman is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Strongman does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
