Rules

Teqball is played on a curved table with a size-5 football, between two players (singles) or four (doubles). Players may touch the ball up to three times per possession, but never twice in a row with the same body part, and any part of the body except the hands and arms may be used. The ball must cross the net on each return, players may not touch the net, the table or each other, and matches are decided over sets played to 12 points with a two-point margin — best of three sets. Serves must be executed to a clean bounce on the opponent's side, with a limited number of attempts, and doubles requires the ball to be passed between partners before it is returned. Because the table is curved, ball speed and rebound angle change with the point of contact, which rewards first-touch control rather than power. FITEQ also governs para teqball under adapted rules.

Positions

Typical roles across emerging sports. These are category-level descriptions, not a sourced teqball squad list.

  • Attacker / offensive role
The point-scoring position in the sport's playing format.
  • Defender
Prevents the opposition from scoring and controls the defensive zone.
  • All-rounder / substitute
Rotates through roles or comes in as a tactical substitute.

Equipment

Standard kit and infrastructure required to train and compete in teqball at a federation-recognised event.

  • Curved TEQ table — manufactured only under licence from the trademark holder, so tables must be imported into India
  • Size-5 football inflated to competition pressure
  • Football-style indoor shoes or bare feet depending on surface, plus standard sportswear
  • Net fitted to the table's centre ridge, with clear run-off space on both sides
  • Beach teqball variant uses the same table set on sand for open-air and beach-cup events

Major Indian Events

Domestic competitions we hold a source for in teqball.

  • National Teqball Championship

India's national championship is run under Teqball India, with the first senior edition organised by the Maharashtra Teqball Association under the national body's aegis. Club structures have developed alongside it, notably Teqball Mumbai, founded by Vinit Jain, the first Indian to represent the country internationally in the sport.

  • Governing structure

Teqball India operates as the national federation under FITEQ, the International Teqball Federation, which was founded in March 2017 and now has around 124 member federations. FITEQ was recognised by the Olympic Council of Asia and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa by 2019 and granted full membership of the Global Association of International Sports Federations in November 2020, with a stated ambition of Olympic inclusion.

International Events

Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in teqball.

  • Teqball World Championships 2024 — India's first medal

Declan Gonsalves and Anas Baig won bronze in men's doubles at the 2024 World Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam — India's first-ever medal in the sport. The event drew 221 athletes from 95 countries across five categories, and the Indian pair beat Ukraine's Shevchuk and Usichenko 2-1 in the quarter-final to make India only the 11th nation to medal that year, before losing their semi-final to Thailand.

  • Asia-Pacific Teqball Beach Cup

Vinit Jain became the first Indian athlete to compete internationally in the sport at the 2019 edition in Sanya, China, finishing sixth. He is a two-time national gold medallist and came to teqball from a football background, having led India's under-21 minifootball team at the 2018 World Cup in Prague.

  • World Championship structure

The championships began as the Teqball World Cup in Budapest in 2017 with 20 nations, expanded to 42 countries at Reims in 2018, added mixed doubles in 2019 and reached the full five-category format by 2021. Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Thailand and Brazil have dominated the medals.

Career Options

Ways to build a career in teqball — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.

  • Teqball has an unusual structural barrier: the name is trademarked and only the trademark holder's licensees may legally manufacture the curved TEQ table, so equipment cannot be produced locally or improvised. The inventors regard these restrictions as essential to controlling the sport's growth, but it means table access in India depends entirely on imports
  • The sport's crossover appeal to footballers is its main recruitment route — India's leading players have come from football, futsal and minifootball backgrounds, and top clubs worldwide use teqball tables as touch-and-control training tools
  • It is genuinely low-impact and non-contact: players cannot touch each other or the table, which removes the injury profile of competitive football and makes it accessible to a wider range of ages and fitness levels
  • Referee and coach certification runs through FITEQ's online Level-C examinations, which are open internationally and give Indian officials a direct route to accreditation without travelling
  • The sport was invented in Hungary — sources give the date as either 2012 or 2014 — by former footballer Gábor Borsányi, businessman György Gattyán and computer scientist Viktor Huszár, and has recruited football figures including Ronaldinho, Messi and Neymar as ambassadors, alongside sponsorship from major global brands
  • FITEQ also governs para teqball, giving the discipline a parallel pathway for para-athletes from its inception rather than as a later addition

FAQs

Common questions about teqball in India.

Who governs Teqball in India?▾

We list Teqball Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for Teqball, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Teqball an Olympic sport?▾

No, Teqball is not on the Olympic programme.

What government schemes support Teqball athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Teqball is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Teqball does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
