Trail Running is listed on SportSupport in the athletics category. Its recorded origin is Modern. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list ITRA India as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Trail Running has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through ITRA India may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme.

Trail running is competitive running over natural terrain — mountain paths, forest single track, ridgelines and unpaved jeep tracks — where the route rather than a fixed distance defines the race, and paved sections are kept to a small share of the course. Races are point-to-point or looped, marked with flags and reflective tape, and run under published cut-off times at intermediate checkpoints; missing a cut-off, straying off the marked line or shedding compulsory kit brings disqualification. Organisers set a mandatory kit list scaled to altitude and weather, and self-sufficiency between aid stations is expected. Course difficulty is quantified by elevation gain and distance, and accredited races award ITRA performance-index points and UTMB running stones that feed international rankings and entry ballots; World Athletics recognises trail running as a discipline of athletics with its own world championship.
Authoritative rulebook: ITRA India. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Governing/organising body
ITRA India is the body we list as the Indian governing/organising body for Trail Running, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group competition. Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in trail running.
- AFI Ultra, Mountain and Trail Running programme
The Athletics Federation of India has run trail and ultra selection since 2017. AFI's published Ultra, Mountain and Trail Running Policy sets selection criteria and manages national team entries for World and continental championships, alongside its Ultra Running committee.
- Domestic trail circuit
India's trail calendar is built by private organisers rather than a national championship. The Malnad Ultra, run through the coffee-growing Malnad region of Karnataka, is among the largest and reaches its 10th edition in 2026; it anchors the South India Trail Grail, a circuit completed by finishing four of six 50km-plus trail ultras across a season. Many Indian trail races carry ITRA or UTMB accreditation, which feeds results into the international ranking systems.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in trail running.
- Trail World Championships
India debuted in June 2017 in Italy with a two-man team of Ullas Narayan and Kieren D'Souza. For the 2018 edition at Penyagolosa, Castellón, Spain, AFI selected five runners — Ullas Hosahalli Narayana, Lokesh Kumar Meena, Ajit Singh Narwal, Sampathkumar Subramanian and Kieren D'Souza.
- Selection standards
AFI requires applicants to have run at least one ultra of 50km or more in the preceding year and at least one trail ultra in the preceding two years, plus an ITRA performance index of at least 600 for men and 550 for women. The bar bites: for 2018, ten men and one woman applied, five men qualified, and the sole woman applicant did not meet the standard, so India fielded no woman.
- World Mountain and Trail Running Championships
Since 2022 the IAU, the International Trail Running Association and the World Mountain Running Association have combined their events into a single championship under World Athletics. AFI has issued selection announcements for the 3rd edition and for the Asia Pacific Trail Running Championship.
Leagues
No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for trail running. The national championship under ITRA India remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in trail running — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- AFI's own policy states plainly that these are athlete-funded events: all expenditure for participation is borne by the individual athlete. AFI facilitates entry and meets basic kitting, and the local organising committee provides visa documentation, but athletes must confirm willingness to self-fund at application and pay an accommodation deposit — failure to pay on time means the entry is withdrawn
- Trail running was recognised as a discipline of athletics by the IAAF, now World Athletics, at its 2015 Congress in Beijing; ITRA, formed in 2013 and based in Lausanne, maintains the performance index and route difficulty ratings that Indian selection depends on
- Because selection runs off ITRA points rather than a domestic championship, Indian trail runners build their case through accredited private races at home and abroad rather than through a single national trial
- Race organising, route design and event operations around the growing private circuit are the most realistic paid roles in Indian trail running, alongside adventure tourism in the Himalayas and Western Ghats
- The gender gap is a live problem — India's early trail teams have been all-male, and widening the pool of women meeting the ITRA threshold is the clearest development need

FAQs
Common questions about trail running in India.
Who governs Trail Running in India?▾
We list ITRA India as the Indian governing/organising body for Trail Running, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Trail Running an Olympic sport?▾
No, Trail Running is not on the Olympic programme.
How do I start playing Trail Running in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under ITRA India. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Trail Running athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Trail Running is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Trail Running does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
