Triathlon is listed on SportSupport in the athletics category. Its recorded origin is 1970s USA. It is on the Olympic programme. We list Indian Triathlon Federation as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Triathlon is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through Indian Triathlon Federation against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.
Scholarships & Funding
Central, state and private scholarships available for triathlon athletes in India.
- Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)
Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.
- Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)
Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether triathlon is among the covered disciplines.
- National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to triathlon.
- Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons
Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Rules
Triathlon is a continuous swim-bike-run race under World Triathlon rules, with the clock running through the two transitions (T1 and T2). Standard distances are sprint (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run), Olympic (1.5km/40km/10km), 70.3 half-iron (1.9km/90km/21.1km) and full Ironman (3.8km/180km/42.2km). Draft-legal elite racing permits riding in a pack; age-group and long-distance racing is normally non-drafting, with time penalties served in a penalty box for drafting, blocking or littering. Helmets must be fastened before the bike is removed from the rack and may not be unfastened until it is re-racked; no outside assistance or accompanying pacers are allowed, riders must complete their own repairs, and wetsuit use is decided by measured water temperature. Related formats include aquathlon (swim-run), duathlon (run-bike-run) and paratriathlon, which uses classified categories with handcycles, tandems and guides.
Authoritative rulebook: Indian Triathlon Federation. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in triathlon.
- ITF National Championships
Organized by the Indian Triathlon Federation (ITF, registered 8 May 1990 in Chennai under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, affiliated to World Triathlon and Asian Triathlon, recognized by the Government of India). ITF maintains national rankings used to select athletes for Asian Junior/U23/Senior/Masters championships, South Asian Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. India's first paratriathlon national championship was held in Chennai in May 2023.
- Independent endurance events
A significant private-event ecosystem operates alongside ITF, including the Delhi International Triathlon (since 2012), Ultraman India, and the International Triathlon Championship in Gandhinagar, Gujarat (founded 2018) offering sprint, Olympic and half-iron distances.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in triathlon.
- Asian Games / South Asian Triathlon
Chaurushi Thakur competed at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. Pragnya Mohan has won and defended the South Asian Triathlon title.
- Ironman and Ultraman
Kaustubh Radkar has finished the Ironman Triathlon 40 times — the first and only Indian to do so — and was the only Indian to finish the Ironman World Championship at Kona in 2017. Anu Vaidyanathan became the first Indian athlete to qualify for a 70.3 World Championship event and the first Asian to finish an Ultraman (10km swim, 420km bike, 84.4km run), placing 6th at Ultraman Canada in 2009.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in triathlon — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Pragnya Mohan, a chartered accountant coached by her marathoner father, became national champion within nine months of taking up triathlon in 2013 and has held the title since — she has described driving four hours to reach open water for swim training and cycling before dawn to avoid traffic
- Cost is a genuine barrier: a basic competitive setup (tri-bike or road bike, running shoes, pool access) runs to roughly ₹1 lakh, and only around ten Indians cross an Ironman-brand finish line in a typical year
- India's triathlon community skews toward accomplished amateurs from other professions — IT engineers, marine engineers, civil servants, and serving and retired armed forces personnel — rather than a full-time professional class
- Chaurushi Thakur's path illustrates the federation pathway: she entered via aquathlon, was noticed by the national federation in 2006, won a national title on a borrowed utility bike, and joined the ITU Development Team in 2009
- ITF certificates are recognized for college admission, employment and scholarships, and nationally ranked triathletes get first preference for World Triathlon certification courses — a real coaching and officiating pathway
- Swimming remains the structural bottleneck — access to pools and open water is far more limited in India than running or cycling infrastructure

- Government of Maharashtra (Sports and Youth Services)Maharashtra 5% Reservation for Meritorious Sportspersons (revised policy, 2026)
On 8 September 2026 the Maharashtra Cabinet approved a revised policy for the 5 per cent parallel reservation for meritorious sportspersons in direct recruitment in state government and semi-government bodies. Sports included in at least three consecutive Summer Olympic Games after 2005 qualify, and Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Chess, Mallakhamb and Cricket have been added as regional sports. Under the revised policy, sports certificates must be verified through a digital Sports E-Certificate system within three months, and earlier government resolutions on the quota were rescinded.
- Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and PensionsRecruitment of Meritorious Sportspersons to Group C Posts in the Central Government (DoPT Sports Quota)
Under instructions of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), central government ministries and departments can directly recruit meritorious sportspersons to Group C posts (including erstwhile Group D) that are filled by direct recruitment, in relaxation of the normal recruitment procedure. The list of qualifying sports has 65 disciplines (63 listed in 2020, with Tennis Ball Cricket added in January 2021 and Yogasana in June 2022). Kudo, Karate, Taekwondo, Golf, Judo, Boxing, Wrestling, Badminton, Cricket and Tennis are among them. Railways and a few scientific and atomic-energy services follow separate rules.
FAQs
Common questions about triathlon in India.
Who governs Triathlon in India?▾
We list Indian Triathlon Federation as the Indian governing/organising body for Triathlon, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Triathlon an Olympic sport?▾
Yes, Triathlon is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by Indian Triathlon Federation against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.
How do I start playing Triathlon in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under Indian Triathlon Federation. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Triathlon athletes?▾
TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Triathlon is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Triathlon does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
