An ultramarathon is any footrace longer than the 42.195km marathon. Two formats dominate: fixed-distance races (50km, 100km, 100 miles, or multi-day point-to-point routes) where the fastest finisher wins, and fixed-time races (6, 12 or 24 hours) where the athlete covering the greatest distance wins. IAU world and continental championships are contested over 100km, 50km, 24 hours and trail. Runners must pass through mandatory checkpoints within published cut-off times, carry any listed mandatory kit at mountain and desert events, and accept pacing or crew support only where the race rules allow it; outside assistance, course-cutting and missing a cut-off bring disqualification. Guinness World Record route runs — single-supported journeys along a set highway or national route — are verified separately by Guinness under its own evidence rules and are not IAU or AFI championship results.
Authoritative rulebook: Indian Ultra Runners Association. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

India's men's team won gold at both editions — in Australia the trio totalled 758.248km ahead of hosts Australia and New Zealand, with Ullas Narayana third individually and Saurav Ranjan fourth.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in ultra marathon — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Ultrarunning in India is largely self-funded and amateur — the 2018 world championship team included a serving Indian Navy officer, a Delhi working professional, a marathon coach and a diagnostics business owner, all competing alongside their careers
- Sufiya Sufi's route into the sport is the sport's best-known story: born in Ajmer, raised by her mother after her father died when she was 16, she trained in Kathak, worked ten years as ground staff at Delhi's IGI Airport, ran her first 3km in a Delhi park in 2017, and quit her job that year to run full-time. Her achievements are Guinness World Records for point-to-point route runs — a category distinct from IAU/AFI sanctioned championship results — including five records: the Golden Quadrilateral (6,002km in 110 days), Kashmir to Kanyakumari, the Manali-Leh highway, and the fastest crossing of Qatar north to south (200km in 30:31)
- She has been candid about the sport's limits in India — describing ultrarunning as a new sport without recognition, struggling to find sponsorship, and at times crowdfunding her expeditions; she trained as a largely self-taught athlete
- Domestic ultrarunning is organised around a small number of privately promoted races; we hold no sourced participation figure for the sport in India
- Adventure tourism, race organizing, coaching and crew support around Himalayan events in Ladakh, Spiti and Manali form the main allied career base

How do I start playing Ultra Marathon in India?▾
