Vallam Kali is a traditional Kerala boat race contested on backwater lakes and rivers in heats over a straight course, typically 1.2-1.4km, with boats drawn into lanes and progressing through preliminary heats to semi-finals and a final. Crews race in categories defined by boat type — chundan vallam (snake boat), churulan, iruttukuthi, veppu and odi vallam among them — with the chundan events carrying the highest prestige. Each boat carries a fixed complement of rowers plus helmsmen at the rudder, singers leading the vanchipattu rhythm and deck-beaters keeping stroke; crews must stay within their lane, and veering into a rival's water, false starts or interference draws disqualification. Results are decided on finish order, and race committees set boat length, rower counts and eligibility for each category, with village and club ownership determining which crews may enter a boat.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in vallam kali.
- Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Held annually at Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha — the most prestigious event in the sport. Its origin dates to December 1952, when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited Alappuzha, was so captivated by a snake boat race that he jumped aboard the winning boat (Nadubhagam Chundan), and on returning to Delhi commissioned a silver trophy bearing his autograph. The 72nd edition is scheduled for Punnamada Lake in August 2026. Around 20 boats, each roughly 100 feet long and powered by about 100 rowers, race a 1.4km course before roughly 200,000 spectators.
- Champions Boat League (CBL)
An IPL-style professional regatta circuit launched in 2019 and inaugurated by Sachin Tendulkar, linking around 12 traditional races into a single season broadcast on Star Sports. The Nehru Trophy opens the season and the President's Trophy Boat Race at Ashtamudi Lake, Kollam (held on Kerala Piravi, 1 November) closes it. Recent editions have added non-traditional venues including Marine Drive in Kochi, Beypore and Cheruvathur.
- Traditional temple and festival races
Champakulam Moolam is considered the oldest, tracing to the installation of the idol at Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple. The Aranmula Uthrattathi Boat Race is more ritual than competition, honouring Lord Krishna at the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple and culminating in the Vallasadya feast. Others include the Kallada Jalotsavam (Kollam, since 1969), Kandassankadavu (Thrissur, since 1956) and the Sree Narayana Jayanthi race at Kumarakom.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in vallam kali — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- The chundan vallam holds the record as the largest water vessel used for any sport — 100 to 120 feet long, carrying 90 to 100 rowers who stroke at 90-120 beats per minute, accompanied by vanchipattu boat songs and the thunder of wooden poles pounding the deck
- Boats are community-owned rather than corporate assets: the village of Veeyapuram raised roughly ₹90 lakh (about $94,300) to launch its boat in 2019, and a single season costs close to ₹70 lakh to fund
- There is a genuine funding inequity — boat-owning communities recover only a fraction of their costs from sponsors and prize money, and shareholders have said they receive little support even as the Kerala government uses the races heavily to promote tourism
- Rowing is often multigenerational within families and villages, with clubs like the United Boat Club hiring crews to row particular boats; the sport's three-to-five month season involves months of training on rivers like the Pamba
- Women's boat races have been added in recent years as a deliberate inclusivity measure, alongside eco-friendly initiatives to reduce plastic waste on the backwaters
