Yogasana is listed on SportSupport in the gymnastics category. Its recorded origin is Ancient India. It is not on the Olympic programme. We list National Yogasana Sports Federation as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Yogasana has a federation and state-level pathway in India, and athletes selected through National Yogasana Sports Federation may be eligible for state sports-quota employment and state cash awards where their state notifies the discipline. TOPS does not apply, as the discipline is outside the Olympic programme. Yogasana appears on the official Khelo India Games discipline list as "Yogasana", so junior talent identified by the discipline's selectors can be considered under Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID). Competitive yogasana is contested as a judged sport: athletes perform a set sequence of asanas within a fixed time on a mat inside a marked performance area, and a panel of certified judges scores each posture on accuracy of form, alignment, flexibility, stability, balance and control, with additional marks for difficulty and overall presentation. Events are divided into Traditional, Artistic, Rhythmic and Athletic Yogasana formats — Artistic and Rhythmic are performed solo, in pairs or in groups, often to music, while Traditional yogasana is judged strictly on prescribed compulsory and optional postures. Competition runs across six age categories from Sub-Junior (10-14) through to veteran divisions, with separate men's and women's sections. Deductions apply for wobbling, incomplete holds, breaking the required hold time, stepping outside the mat area or exceeding the time limit, and athletes compete barefoot in approved attire so that body lines remain visible to the judges.
Authoritative rulebook: National Yogasana Sports Federation. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

- Yogasana Senior National Championships
Organized by Yogasana Bharat (formerly the National Yogasana Sports Federation, established December 2020), recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports as India's national sports federation for yogasana and affiliated to the Indian Olympic Association and World Yogasana. Competitive yogasana in India is older than the federation — formal competitions ran under the West Bengal Yoga Federation from 1973 onwards, and MYAS formally recognized yogasana as a competitive sport in December 2020.
- Khelo India and National Games
Yogasana was included in the Khelo India Youth Games 2021 and featured at the National Games 2025 in Uttarakhand.
International Events

- World Yogasana Championship

Japan was a distant second (3 gold), and Argentina's Nabila Barraza was the most successful individual athlete (2 gold, 3 silver). Nepal won 52 medals total, second-most of any contingent.
- Asian Yogasana Sport Championship
India won a record 83 gold medals (87 total) at the 2025 edition in Delhi, with over 21 countries competing.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in yogasana — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Competition formats span Traditional, Artistic, Rhythmic and Athletic Yogasana, judged on posture accuracy, alignment, flexibility, stability, balance, control, difficulty and presentation, across six age categories from Sub-Junior (10-14) to veteran divisions
- India's stated long-term goal is Olympic recognition for yogasana, explicitly modelled on the pathway taken by gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics
- Worth noting honestly: competitive yogasana remains genuinely debated within the global yoga community, with some practitioners arguing that turning asana practice into a judged sport elevates the physical layer above yoga's other limbs, in a tradition where striving is itself identified as an obstacle
- Multiple organizations operate in this space — alongside MYAS-recognized Yogasana Bharat, bodies including the Yoga Federation of India (1974), Universal Yoga Sports Federation and Yog Sports Foundation run their own competitions
- Playing pathway through Yogasana Bharat's district, state and national championships; coach and referee certification programmes are expanding as the sport formalizes

Common questions about yogasana in India.
Who governs Yogasana in India?▾
We list National Yogasana Sports Federation as the Indian governing/organising body for Yogasana, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Yogasana an Olympic sport?▾
No, Yogasana is not on the Olympic programme.
How do I start playing Yogasana in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under National Yogasana Sports Federation. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Yogasana athletes?▾
TOPS does not apply, as Yogasana is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Yogasana appears on the official Khelo India Games discipline list as "Yogasana", so athletes identified by the discipline's selectors can be considered under Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID). Appearing on the list is not itself a grant of funding.
