Eventing is listed on SportSupport in the equestrian category. Its recorded origin is Military Europe. It is on the Olympic programme. We list EFI as the Indian governing/organising body for the sport.
Eventing is on the pathway that runs through India's national sports federations to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), with selection running through EFI against its published benchmarks. Being on this pathway is not itself a statement that the discipline is currently in TOPS — TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group chosen by the Mission Olympic Cell.
Scholarships & Funding
Central, state and private scholarships available for eventing athletes in India.
- Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID)
Monthly stipend (₹10,000 for selected Khelo India athletes), boarding, coaching and kit at accredited centres for talent identified through the Khelo India selection process (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports). Applies only to disciplines on the official Khelo India Games list, and only to athletes it selects.
- Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)
Central government scheme covering training, foreign exposure, equipment and an out-of-pocket allowance (up to ₹50,000/month) for athletes inducted by the Mission Olympic Cell. TOPS covers a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines rather than every Olympic sport, and induction is decided athlete by athlete; we hold no current list confirming whether eventing is among the covered disciplines.
- National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports fund used to sponsor elite athletes' training, foreign coaches and equipment. Allocations are made case by case; we hold no record of NSDF support specific to eventing.
- Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons
Lifetime monthly pension (₹20,000 for Olympic/World/Asian/CWG medallists; scaled by tier) for retired internationals who meet the scheme's medal criteria — Government of India.

Eventing is an equestrian triathlon: one horse-and-rider combination contests dressage, cross-country and show jumping. The dressage test scores accuracy and obedience through a set sequence of movements, converted into penalty points. Cross-country is ridden over fixed natural obstacles against an optimum time, with 11 penalties for a refusal, 20 for a second, and elimination for a fall of horse or rider or a third refusal; time faults accrue at 0.4 per second over the optimum. Show jumping follows, with 4 penalties per knockdown and 1 per second over time. The lowest cumulative penalty score wins. Horse welfare is paramount — mandatory veterinary inspections (horse inspections) can eliminate a combination at any stage.
Authoritative rulebook: EFI. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

Major Indian Events
Domestic competitions we hold a source for in eventing.
- Governance note
Equestrian competitions are organized by the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI), currently run by an ad-hoc committee. The federation has a documented history of serious internal dysfunction — ahead of the 2018 Asian Games it announced a team selection, then declared it null and void amid office-bearer infighting, and the Indian Olympic Association dropped the entire squad before the Sports Ministry intervened to clear a scaled-back team.
International Events
Continental and world-level competitions we hold a source for in eventing.
- Asian Games
Fouaad Mirza won silver in both individual and team eventing at Jakarta 2018, becoming the first Indian to win an individual equestrian medal since 1982 — ending a 36-year drought. India's dressage team won historic gold at Hangzhou 2023, with Hriday Chheda among the winning squad; both riders are selected for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Games. India has won 14 total equestrian medals at the Asian Games since the sport's 1982 debut.
- Olympic Games
Mirza became the first Indian equestrian to qualify for the Olympics in 20 years (Tokyo 2020 — only the third Indian ever, after Indrajit Lamba 1996 and Imtiaz Anees 2000) and the first to reach an Olympic eventing final, finishing 23rd.
- International FEI events
Mirza won a CCI3*-S gold at Strzegom, Poland in 2024 — finishing ahead of Tokyo 2020 Olympic eventing champion Julia Krajewski.
Leagues
No dedicated professional league is currently catalogued for eventing. The national championship under EFI remains the top domestic competition.

Career Options
Ways to build a career in eventing — on the field, on the sidelines and behind the scenes.
- Fouaad Mirza's career illustrates both the sport's potential and its real structural challenges in India: despite his historic results, EFI initially didn't want to send a team to the 2018 Asian Games at all, relenting only after private sponsorship pressure
- Mirza's Olympic campaign — including a new competition horse — was funded by private backing from the Embassy Group and Jitu Virwani over nearly a decade, rather than institutional support
- He comes from a distinguished equestrian lineage — his father is one of India's leading equine veterinarians, and his family traces back to Mirza Ismail and Agha Aly Asker
- Playing pathway through EFI-recognized clubs and stud farms, historically concentrated around Bangalore; private ownership and training of competition horses is a major, often prohibitive cost barrier; coaching pathway often involves training abroad, as Mirza has done in the UK and Germany under Olympic-level coaches

FAQs
Common questions about eventing in India.
Who governs Eventing in India?▾
We list EFI as the Indian governing/organising body for Eventing, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.
Is Eventing an Olympic sport?▾
Yes, Eventing is on the Olympic programme. Athletes selected by EFI against its published criteria can be considered for TOPS funding.
How do I start playing Eventing in India?▾
The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under EFI. Age-group state championships follow from there.
What government schemes support Eventing athletes?▾
TOPS supports a Core Group and a Development Group of disciplines selected by the Mission Olympic Cell, rather than every Olympic sport. We hold no current list confirming whether Eventing is among them, so we make no TOPS claim for it. State governments give cash awards to medallists at events they notify. Eventing does not appear on the official Khelo India Games discipline list, so we make no Khelo India claim for it.
