Reviewed profileAchievements, tournaments, coaches and FAQs on this page are compiled by hand from federation, government and press reporting, drawing on National Gatka Association of India (gatkaa.com), The Tribune — Gatka inclusion in 37th National Games, Khalsa Vox — 11th National Gatka Championship coverage. These are not cited to individual documents: we hold no per-claim source for them, so treat dates, counts and career records here as a summary rather than a reference. Rules

Gatka is a Sikh martial art from Punjab, practised with the soti (wooden stick) paired with a farri (small leather shield), and rooted in the shastar vidya tradition. Competitive gatka is contested on a marked circular or square arena in timed rounds, usually two to three minutes, by age and weight category. Points are awarded for clean, controlled strikes to legal target areas (torso, arms, legs) delivered with the soti while defending with the farri; strikes to the head, groin and spine are barred, as are grappling, kicking and uncontrolled full-force blows. Judges also assess stance, footwork (pentra), rhythm and defensive shield work. Alongside the fighting event, championships run demonstration categories for single and group weapon display — chakkar, talwar and marathi — judged on technique, synchronisation and traditional form. Wearing a patka is a compulsory part of competition dress.

Authoritative rulebook: Gatka Federation of India. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

FAQs

Common questions about gatka in India.

Who governs Gatka in India?▾

We list Gatka Federation of India as the Indian governing/organising body for Gatka, and state associations affiliated to it run age-group and state-level competition. We hold no current-year Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognition record for it, so this is not a statement that it is currently a recognised national sports federation — recognition is granted year by year.

Is Gatka an Olympic sport?▾

No, Gatka is not on the Olympic programme.

How do I start playing Gatka in India?▾

The usual routes are a school team under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), a college team under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), or a private academy affiliated to your state association under Gatka Federation of India. Age-group state championships follow from there.

What government schemes support Gatka athletes?▾

TOPS does not apply, as Gatka is outside the Olympic programme. State-government cash awards or sports-quota employment can apply where a state notifies the discipline, which varies by state. Gatka appears on the official Khelo India Games discipline list as "Gatka", so athletes identified by the discipline's selectors can be considered under Khelo India Talent Identification & Development (KITID). Appearing on the list is not itself a grant of funding.
