Gatka is a Sikh martial art from Punjab, practised with the soti (wooden stick) paired with a farri (small leather shield), and rooted in the shastar vidya tradition. Competitive gatka is contested on a marked circular or square arena in timed rounds, usually two to three minutes, by age and weight category. Points are awarded for clean, controlled strikes to legal target areas (torso, arms, legs) delivered with the soti while defending with the farri; strikes to the head, groin and spine are barred, as are grappling, kicking and uncontrolled full-force blows. Judges also assess stance, footwork (pentra), rhythm and defensive shield work. Alongside the fighting event, championships run demonstration categories for single and group weapon display — chakkar, talwar and marathi — judged on technique, synchronisation and traditional form. Wearing a patka is a compulsory part of competition dress.
Authoritative rulebook: Gatka Federation of India. Age-group and school-level variations are published by SGFI and the state associations each season.

- Government of Punjab (Department of Sports and Youth Services; Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms)Punjab 3% Reservation for Sportsmen and Sportswomen in State Government Jobs
The Government of Punjab has fixed a 3% direct quota in recruitment so that sportsmen and sportswomen of the state can get state government jobs, under its Sports Reservation Rules. The rules refer to Class III and IV state services; in 2018 the state's Sports Minister described the 3% reservation as covering state government jobs, boards, corporations, cooperative and statutory bodies and local authorities for graded sportspersons who are residents of Punjab and have represented the state at national level. Gatka was added to Punjab's State Sports Policy gradation list in 2015, so Gatka players can get gradation certificates and use this quota. In July 2025 an opposition MLA said the 3% quota had not been functioning since 2016; the government's position was not found, so check each recruitment notice.
